mtz or mtr

im goin for new tyres on my patrol wranglers mtr,s or baja mtz 285x75x16 and body had either main driving 60k round trip on highway everyday and the odd trip to vic high country/ cheers skinna

For what your doing, do you really need muddies? Sound like you would be better off with something like a BFG AT... Failing that, if looks are important, MTZ's seem to be the in thing with the bling kids (right after claws), and you can read threads on here about MTR's and decide yaself.

i would go MTZ'S any day over mtr's as MTR'S don't seem to be very aggresive at all and i did not like the set i had,they seemed to clog up real quick and were almost useless at 50% tread. My 2 cents worth.

There basically the same. There both just a mud tyre.
I had 35"MTR's, generally they where pretty good bit hit and miss in the wet. Some times they would grip heaps, then traction would be lost mid cnr.
Overall they where alright, but probably no worse than anything else.

I wasn't so impressed with my MTZ's. They don't bag over terrain like MTR's do however if you want to load her up the MTZ's will hold heaps of weight so good for over 3 tonne.

Claws are definitly a step up from both because of the mud issues.
Anyway with that many K's on road it will drive you mad me thinks.
I drove to Perth via Ayres Rock and Melbourne on the way back to Brisbane and the MTZ's annoyed me big time. Short trips you can put up with.

Maybe get road tyres and a 2nd set for offroad.

My MTR's are so bloody noisy now.
Heaps of tread left but they are crap in the mud now.
Great over rocks though.

i have had both. currently on MTZs but wish i was back on MTRs. Offroad both seem equal but onroad the MTZs have all sorts of viabrations, not balance but the tyres wearing out of round. I had the same issues with STTs and then found out they are basically the same tyre :bad-words:

I've had both MTR's & MTZ's (2 pairs). I'll be going to MTZ's again, very happy with them on & off road.

The MTR's seemed to wear pretty quick I thought compared to my MTZ's though in saying this I staked a sidewall on the MTZ's & ripped a big gash in the MTR's & never had a problem with the side wall on the MTR's :?

These are exactly the two tyres I have been contemplating getting, and I keep an eye on all these posts, but damn this is getting confusing..

My 35" MTR's are wearing soooo slowly, just as well as I am at uni (ie: no cessh)

They're so soft and compliant when aired down... OMFG on rocks is all I can say. There are probably better tyres for mud but for a really really good overall tyre that still drives fine on the road, I dont think you can go past teh MTR's.

my first set of offroad tyres were mtr's and were good but at 50% tread they were garbage.
second set were baja claws and were heaps better than the mtr's and gripped very well in all circumstances.
Third set were kumho kl17 (think that is what the number was) and they ate the claws and the mtr's for breakfast but had weak sidewall protection.
i now have maxxis creepy crawly's and find them great offroad but horrid onroad.
I think no matter what tyre you get it won't be good for everything,that is why 2 sets are they way to go if your half serious about having the right tyres for onroad and offroad.

Had my mtz's for about 3 months now absolutly stoked with them off road AND onroad, i like them much better than my previous BFG muddies. A few mates have MTR's they're pretty happy with them also, I spose it depends what price you get them for

I run a set of MTZ on my 73 series and I find them great both on and off the road. Even on the road in the wet they are not to bad and as for off road, well f#?k me dead, they are awsome. But it does come back to what a wise old man once told me, 'opinions are like arseholes...everyone has one'. Good luck with your decicion.

Ive run both MTR's and MTZ's, and theres not really 'that' much difference...Just get whateva tyre is the cheapest on the day.

Well the age old debate with stories fore and against and some that clearly make no sense or they have had product faults on both sides and not retuurned to point of purchase..

My 2c having driven on claws mtrs stt mtz blah blah blah is?

this fear of driving on a muddy if you do a few km's! = Crap unless your racing and need rubber 90<% just drive on them. work out what extra $$ a year in rubber it may be costing you and i suspect it will be 3 parts of nothing..

I rep and drive muddies-- a sin i'm led to believe but i have better things to do each wknd than change rubber and they look cool :D

Currently on MTZ's 305/ 70/16 i think and done 50 000km's and looking very nice. If i had to guess another 30 000 easy enough so not bad going on a patrol wagon. Been balance twice and due again now. had problems with balancing some other brands to often..

MTRS as discussed a million times before great for most things but mud.

Mtz's tend to dig a little more on sand for various reasons but in all other aspects in my opinion they are the goods :D so MTZ :armsup:

And quite a few mates having seen mine have tracked them down and happy also.

I think a our friend RYANO at Fourby's has been looking after all :armsup: he's a good egg :armsup:
