transfer noise

I am going through isolating and trying to deal with one noise at a time.
there is a chattering noise, that i notice mostly at highway speeds.
While looking around for it, i held my hand on top of the transfer lever, and it stopped. as long as i am pushing the lever down towards the floor the sound is not there.

Does anyone have any idea of what it might be, and how to fix it?

Puk.

while we are at it, there is an oil leak from the top of the transfer case somewhere. would this just be a breather thing, or is it something that needs attention? (hopefully without dropping out the whole transfer case!?)

The NOISE is probably the transfer stick vibrating up and down, due to a worn shifter bush.
The VIBRATION, which could be several things, is causing the noise. Check uni's etc.
If the oil leak is from the shifter hole, replacing the bush will help a bit, but oil shouldn't get out there unless car is on extreme angle or box is overfull. If it's from one of the flanges, new seals will be needed.

I agree with want33s, sounds like the shifter bush. Also, just drop the tcase out and have a look. Its a 20 minute job tops, if you've never done it before.
