I'm fed up with having to put up with petrol fumes in the cab from the jerrycan which normally sits in the back of the rig.

So I got all industrious and made up a rear rack for the jerrycan and so far its great.....BUT......

What does everyone use to shut the damn rattling up...line the rack wth carpet maybe??? ( tried rubber once on the suzi rack but ya couldnt get the can out on a hot day !!! )

What does everyone use to hold it down.. ocky starps, leather belt, chain and padlock ????

I've got both a steel jerry and the "new" style placky thing..... the placky one is certainly quieter but might rub through sooner.

your thoughts are.......

I made one for my 4runner were the spare wheel normaly lives. I made the frame from steel and held the jerry can in by a small tie down strap. the frame was powder coated and didnt make any nose.

I used 3 pieces of foam (front back and bottom) plus a strap over the top never heard a sound from it.

has anyone used marine grade carpet instead of rubber?, I've got about 5mm clearance between the can and the rack all the way around.

didnt need an ocky strap....
Once I'd glued the carpet in place it tightened everything up nicely, its now quiet and a firm fit.... wonder if that would work on the woman :D

you do know it is illegal to carry fuel i.e. jerry cans outside the vehicle...
There was a big article in Aus 4wd monthly maybe a year ago on the issue.

have heard thats its a big no no these days.....

personally I cant see the differance between 20 lits of petrol on the back in a jerrycan and 400 lits of diesel in twin tanks on one side of a semi..... knowing my luck I'd back it into the side of a semi at gross knots !

the word "water" on the jerry in Texta ........... posibilities ???

get a diesel and you won't need jerry cans any more

seriously isn't it also illegal to carry jerry cans (any fuel container, LPG bottles etc) INSIDE the vehicle also? the only vehicles that can "legally" carry fuel containers are utes?

Pretty much, my understanding was that you could not mound cans on the outside of a car either, only in a trailer or ute. But I could be wrong there.

which raises the question of vehicles with factory jerry can holders mounted on the tailgate - MQ patrols, old Pajeros etc
