Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Mate saw one for sale today and liked it,it looks to be in good nick. Just want to find out a few things about it for him.
Its an 86 model, 4.2L V6 Petty. 250000 on the clock. LX Model.
What sort of mileage would he expect to get?
Is it Carby or EFI?
Coils or Leafs?
250,000ks seems like a fair bit for a petty to me, can anyone comment on this?
Any known or common issues to look for during an inspection?
Is $3500 reasonable for one that seems, cosmetically at least, to be in good nick. And the guy assures me over the phone its got "a good engine and a good gearbox"

Back on the amount of K's for a sec, what would you expect to pay for a rebuild? or whats a cheap transplant option if the engine goes sour after he buys it?

hey mate i have a bundera (LJ70) all bunderas are coil.
mines a LX so power windows but its a 2.4L 4cyl carby (22R engine G52 gearbox.) mine had 220,000 on the clock but i got the timing chain replaced @ 216,000kms

i havent herd of a 4.2L petty as standard in a bundera!!

as for what to look for try the rear sliding windows check the edges for rust.

as for cheap transplant i would say 3.8L V6 out of a commodoor.

Ok, if the 4.2 wasn't standard are there any 6's that where? Talking to the guy on the phone, he doesn't sound like he knew a great deal about cars, even his own, so he could have made a mistake.

it depends if its a bundy or a bj73, i know the bj's came out with a straight 6 petty but i dont think the bundy ever did

Toyota Land Cruiser 73 Series

73 Series These are commonly called the Mid Wheel Base (MWB) Cruisers. They came out with the FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) tops. They are about 12" longer in the wheel base than the SWB 70's. Powered by the 3F Gasoline engine, or the 3B, the 13BT (basically a turbo 3B), and later the 1HZ (4.2L Diesel), and the 1PZ (a 5 cylinder 3.5L version of the 1HZ). Some of these (gas only) came with an optional 4 speed Automatic transmission. In Venezuela this model is available with the 4.5 liter 1FZ Engine used in the 80 Series!

No, it will not be a BJ73, althought there is a high likley hood that it is an FJ73

the 4.2 pettys are inline 6 not V

I will be selling my v8 conversion kit soon, that could be a cheap conversion

Yep. Expect 17-20l/100km on petrol.
It's a cheap car though - could be a good candidate for a diesel conversion. There is not much room under these for gas tanks so LPG is not very appealing.

yeah the engine is not going to be cheap to run, they have heaps of room under the bonnet for a conversion, I run the 6.2 V8 chev diesel under mine, you can pick up 1hz pretty cheap these days, but to make that worth while you would want to turbo it, which ya gunna have to throw $2000 odd to get it going which makes V8s worth lookiung at

I am not real sure about answers to your questions but i can assure you that the middy's are a super little truck. I have one with the 3B motor in it, wich i do have to admit is a bit short on power for highway driving. Mine was bog standard when I bought it but has had a few mods since then. Here are a couple of pics of mine so you can see what sort of potential the leaf sprung middy's have.
