Im having a few weird problems with the alternator on my hilux, the bloke i bought the hilux off got it put in, its a tweaked surf alternator, the type with the internal regulator. Its currently outputing to much voltage (should be about 12.8 to 13.8 but its doing close to 15 volts.) Does anyone know why it could be doing this? should i just take it off and put in a new voltage regulator? Its playing havoc with my electrics, and my lights get brighter with revs.

Your regulator isn't getting a battery voltage feed signal. It thinks your battery voltage must be very low (because it's not detecting anything) so it's running your alternator flat out to compensate.

If you're handy with a multimeter it shouldn't be hard to identify and fix. If you're not handy, it should be a simple (and cheap) fix for an auto- electrician.

If you need to take it to a professional, I'd be cautious of any quote involving more than half an hour of labour. Anybody who wants to charge more than $35, I'd suggest bringing the quote back here. But I'm a cheapskate. :D
