is it an SJ410 or SJ413? the last two digits indicate the original motor size...you could also check the plates.

From 1984 through to 1988 the 1.0L and 1.3L were sold side by side. 1.3 being the 'deluxe' sort of model, and the 1.0 being the cheaper bargin model, as such. When WT and Vitara came out in '88 all Sierras were 1.3, and Vitara 1.6L. Untill the indian made Maruti came out, it had 1.0, and of course the Vitara has had about 900 engine options.
1.0L had the steel vertical bar grill, the 1.3L has removable plastic grill. Thats the easiest way to tell. 1.3 also has a hump in the bonnet to allow for the taller motor (important if doing engine swap).
Legalwise, a 3.8L V6 might a tad unlikely, especially with standard drivetrain. The 1L drivetrain is slightly lighter than the 1.3 I believe. Legally a suzuki 1.3, or 1.6 won't be much of an issue at all. Bible has stuff on 1.0 to 1.3 conversion I believe.

Your undecided? Have Fun!!! I dont think you'll get it regoed like that somehow

. I'm presuming you didn't buy it with a purpose in mind...
Honestly I think the only part on that car, that would be worth something as a part would be a transfer case. It is a 1L tranny, and will have the 4WD light.
If you have the time and inclination it looks like it would make a project car, paints still on chassis rails thats a start. If you got it cheap, you could do it up a bit, and use it for a 'have fun rig' thats not your DD, and if you snap a CV or something, just get towed home and you can still get to work the next day in your other machine.

Really? I have never seen a suzuki 1.0 later than 1984.
All my literature from them time doesn't indicate a 1.0 available at the same time as the 1.3
1987- 1988 lists a narrow track only at 1.3
1985-1986 lists a narrow track only at 1.3
1983-1984 lists a narrow track only at 970cc

I wasn't born then, so don't have first hand experience. But I have read a few things mentioning it. I do have a 1986 copy of overlander magazine with a 'price guide' in it; and it mentions a 1.0 Sierra, and 1.3 Sierra in it as new cars in 1986. If I could find the damn thing now, I'd scan the page and post it up for you to see, but my room is messier than a wheely bin.
My understanding was, it is these post 1984 1.0's that have the sought after transfer with the 4WD light, and its the pre-84 'stand alone' models that have the typical 1.0 transfer without the light.

It might be the case that some 1.0 tray backs were available after 1984 but I would bet they were old stock. Overlander were/are hardly the last word in accuracy, especially when suzuki's were distributed by completely different companies right through the 80's.
1983 SWB's are 4WD light and 1983 tray backs don't have the light. If the car had front drums, it had no 4WD light, if it had front Discs, it has the light. This is true regardless of year.

I have seen a 87 1lt softie
i told the owner he must be mistaken so we went out in the dark and he showed me the plate on the firewall it said 87
i guess its just one more thing to add to'the 'different dealers in different states' of suzuki pass

most definately wont be a DD for me

, theres no way i could drive that everydy. maybe the odd trip to work here and then but i have the GU for that.
i am planing on turning it into a play toy that it doesnt matter if it breaks as il just come back in the GU and tow it home.
its quite clean from what i can see, the tank is undamaged and the chassis looks in good nic with no scratches or anything.
it has this years and last years stockton permits on the window and a rego sticker to september this year so i think it must have been a beach car that the motor may have blown up (reason for conversion?)
it has 210 on the clock i think?
