Hi Guys, I have a 2003 HZJ79 ute with the 1HZ in it, I'd like to turbo it next month but need to find the best suited turbo for my needs.
I was recommended either of these 2 Garrett's, I was thinking about the GT28 as my choice so far.
GT25 795 USD

GT28 1095 USD

I had started this thread on the IH8MUD.com but people in North America just dont have enough experience with these engines, your help would be appreciated: http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=165863
I am starting to lean towards the GT28 as the GT25 looks to max out too early.
Help would be appreciated.
Louis

Which turbo for 1HZ = not a kit, a turbo model number?

Hi Louis
I have noticed that Turboglide have a GT28 rollerbearing turbo in their 1HZ kits, which I think is the same as the first one you had
http://www.frsport.com/Garrett_GT256...WG_p_2303.html
You can get these turbos with a samll turbine housing (0.64 A/R) or a large turbine housing (0.86 A/R). It would be intersting to know exactly which model housing Turboglide use, what revs they start spooling at and how high revs go before they choke.

I've turboed my 1HZ with a toyota CT26 turbo off a 1HDT motor,
I'm not sure of the compressor wheel size etc, but it spools up
nice and early and doesnt seem to run out of legs with high revs.
I'm only running 10 pounds boost for the sake of longevity.
Some turbo fitters wont fit turbo's to non factory tubo vehicles
until they have done about 100,000 kms because the non-turbo
tolerences between piston to bore are to tight.
Anyway if the Garret T28 has the same specs as the Toyota CT26
you'll have no probs at all, they go great.

What could possibly go wrong????
Thanks for the info guys.
MY dilema now is decideding if I want boost at lower or higher RPM, I think I will probably take the one that produces at higher RPM. I intend to intercool and do a bunch of other things to really crank it up over the next couple of years - so a turbo with more range will be better. The smaller GT25 would probably exceed its limits with a bunch of other modifications.
thanks again!
Oh, and I found a cheap source for these turbos - the GT28 ball bearing for about 1100 Cdn - thats about 1000 AUS I think. One guy quoted me 2700 CDN for a ball bearing turbo - same model!

Just remember there are quite a few reports of the 1HZ being a little fragile if pushed too far, possibly moreso for the post '98 ones (like mine).
Rumour and conjecture but the essence seems to be
1. Pre-combustion chambers heat up too much and crack the head
2. Pistons are not strong enough and / or not cooled enough - crack
3. Big End Bearings do an 80 Series and die.
General consensus *seems* to be 10PSI max and watch EGT's. Further investigtion or some real experiece would be good - anyone?
