GT2860RS Disco Potato Question...

Hi all,

Well another question on my attempt to sort out this custom turbo..

Is the GT2860RS, otherwise known as disco potato, suitable for the TD42?? Otherwise just the GT2860??

I looked at the pictures and also noticed in another thread that the air compressor outlet will face down towards the ground when high mounted on the manifold..

Has anyone used this turbo?? Advice??

One other thing, can the air half of the turbo be spun around the exhaust half or are they fixed??

Cheers,

Hof

First question is what do you want to do with the vehicle, what power out of it? That will decide your turbo application. Yes both turbine and compressor housings can be rotated to any position.

Hi there,

Basically this is my daily driver, BUT will also be doing at least three months of touring early next year..

So I want something reliable and would prefer power down low as that is my driving style..

I figured I would run max 8-10psi..

Would prefer not to have to run watercooling, though I will if necessary..

Thanks for your advice,

Hof

I know of a GU with one of these and an intercooler. Other than having issues with the elec garb on the injector pump. The owner appears very happy.

t28 flange is to small for a td42 and the a/r sizes and wheel sizes are way to small for a td42 will get hot and wont work properly

( My Oppinion )

i use these turbos every day i wouldn't reccomend one sorry

To run any bb turbo you need water lines. Otherwise the bb plastic cage will become damaged.

As for suitabililty, it will may be a litlle large if you only want 8-10 psi. You need to plot airflow requirements from the engine and desired boost pressure you want to run on a compressor map to find the right turbo.

The last two replies interest me as they basically contradict each other..

One of the guys wrote in the other turbo thread running here at the moment said thats what he is using as well..

Also I have found out that the Turboglide setup uses this turbo to, and its fairly well established..

If you say its to small or to large can you then say what is suitable for the application I have specified??

Thanks for your help,

Hof

I suppose it all boils down to experience and having used the above mentioned turbos. Your asking a forum for advice we are giving it, even if it is conflicting. The disco potato is good for 110-130 rwkw, comes in two diff a/r exhaust housings, at aprrox 12-18psi. You dont want this so why not get a smaller version that boosts up quicker again, gives much more torque down low and fits your requirements.

For the sake of the argument Im even willing to post dyno sheets to prove a point. Will anyone elso do that to prove otherwise??
