Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Looking at a 1984 4 door Rangie over the weekend.

He has $2000. ono on it. 2inch lift and engine driven air compressor only extras. No rego, needs a blue slip. Looks to be in good nick from photo, unsure of kms as of yet.

First if i was able to get it for $1500. is it the right price?

Second it has a 5 speed box, are these a weak point? Is there anything i shuold look out for/know about on this model. From memory they went to a smaller weaker CV but that wasn't untill 86?

Any advice apreciated.

Price for older cars is completely driven by condition. If it's rusty and everything is rooted on it then forget it, if it's in good working order and basically an honest car (regardless of any extras) then $2K could easily be it's worth. The mistake people make is comparing prices and not vehicles. I'd rather spend a couple of grand more for a good car than spend less for a shitter. Not everyone is the same (and not everyone is in the same financial position) so this depends on your circumstances. Don't go there with the mind set that you'll take it if he lowers his selling price for 2 reasons. Firstly it may be worth every bit of the $2k asking price but you walk away becasue he wouldn;t bargains with you and secondly you don't want to buy it just because you managed to talk him down in price. If it's a shitter just walk away.

The LT77 5 speeds have a reputation for being somewhat troublesome but not that bad and certainly better than the massive torqueflyte auto they came with at the same time .. poor little 3.5 V8 could hardly move the bloody auto version. If it's been looked after (and it would probably have had a rebuild at some stage) then it depends again on condition. Drive it, use the gearbox and see for yourself. If you're not sure, take someone along who does know.

What the LT77 5 speed probably can't do is take a great deal of horsepower so if you're thinking of dropping a 350 Chev in then you might want to consider another gearbox at the same time.

The smaller CV's came along in 87 or 88 I think so you should be right with the 84 (unless they've been changed and i have seen exactly that happen on some).

I would think that $2000 was a bit much....but then if you really like it then nothing is too much!

With the 84 you are still getting the carby motor so no efi. The air compressor you can pick up for $35 from most wreckers

The smaller CV's did not come into until the 89 update.

As a comparison, I picked up an 88 Rangie in pretty good condition with just a bit of rust on the drivers floor pan registered and with a RWC for $2000 last year.

May have some more questions.

Personally, if was looking at another carby rangie i would be looking at a late 84 phase II or 85/86 pre efi model, these are very solid and just that little nicer than the early 82-84 4 doors. I sold one last year and wish i had kept it.

it would be a lt85 5 speed, heaps weaker than the 4 speed. if you ever see them side by side you will know why. Saying that, it may never give you any troubles if it has been treated nicely, and oils changed regulary. They have a tendency of popping out of 2nd gear when you back off ( well mine used to before it went bang). what do you want it for? i'd spend an extra K and get a 87/88 model with the efi and zf auto.

Rangies never came with the LT85 .

Tje LT85 is the stongest 5 speed ever in a rover IMHO

You'll soon find your 88 has the smaller CV's

Put simply and my personal opinion on this, the LT77 was the worst manual gearbox fitted to a Rangie. I hated it so much that I ended up buying a Chrysler auto Rangie, slow as shit but it converted me to an auto when I updated to the superb ZF unit in my 93 Vogue 'Aquarangie'

I think it was John (Bush65) who told me that rover box names are based on the shaft centres.

So LT95 has 95mm centres.
LT85 has 85mm centres
LT77 with 77mm centres contains the smallest gears of the lot.

For comparison my Isuzu MSA gearbox has 97mm shaft centres.

That is correct. And no surprise the centres between the input and output shafts of the LT230 is 230mm.

Larger centre distance allows for larger, stronger teeth and larger bearings.

BTW LT is for Leyland Transmission.

And my MXA-6R has 100mm shaft centres.

Maybe i should have had another look at this thread earlier today.

I bought it this afternoon. But it is in very good condition in my opinion.
Pretty happy with it, got it for $1600.

A mate of mine has a 77 2 Door with a fair few extras, it has a 4 speed, front and rear lockers, 35's custom made arms.
He is selling it so i think ill try to get all the goodies out of that.
