Hai,

Just trying to gauge a few opinions and methods(s) here......

Just got hold of a 4wd systems auto locker for the front of my GQ pootrol. The discussion of whether they're sh#t or not is irrelevant, after enough reading I've decided it's right for my needs/budget (I'm at uni full time and only work weekends... so the truck is built on a budget these days). Combined with my unbeatable factory rear locker it should pwn hard imo.

To get the thing installed.... I'm not sure whether to just drop the truck off at miscellaneous 4wd mechanic pay $$$$ and pick it up later, or take the diff centre out.. get it fitted... put it back in myself with the idea being I'll save some coin. The problem being I've never yanked a diff centre out of my truck.

I do all the servicing, have changed brake pads, installed teh suspension's , did 9/10th's of the turbo install and most of the quater panel chop :D So I conclude that I'm only mildly retarded with the spanners in my hand. :? Doing things myself has been a learning experience etc. I know loads about my truck after doing stuff blindly

I'm all loaded up with a gregories workshop ditty soooo onto the questions..How hard is it to rip out ? Got any Tips ? Is there a quick way :D ? Should I just stfu and drop the car off and pay the $$$$$ knowing that I can blame someone if something goes wrong

Given what you have stated I would say remove the centre and get it set up in the centre by someone in the know & then re-fit centre to the car!
cheers.

I knew little when i did my locker install but i got it done

Ok there are 2 ways of going about it.

First off take the wheels, brakes off the car, next take the hubs off and and removed the bearing nits to take the whole front discs off. This will then let you access to the stub axles, unbolt them and remove the CV from both sides,

Next unbolt the front tailshaft from the diff and secure it somewhere with some rope or oky strap, you will need to remove from one side (best from the drivers side) the tie rod that goes behind the diff, as when you try to pull the diff out it hits it and your stuffed then. so remove that from the drivers side.

make sure you have drained the old from the housing, simple to do, after that just unbolt the nuts that hold the diff centre to the housing and remove. Take it to someone who knows diffs and have them install the locker into teh carrier, then its just a matter of installing the center back into the housing and putting things back together.

I found another way of getting access was to undo the king pin bearings top and bottom of the swivel hub, remove teh scraper seal at the back adn the whole disc and cv moves free, but thats not the best way to do things. i only do it to change a CV in the bush

pretty good write up above, but dont forget when you unbolt the centre/third member it is quite heavy and you may need a mate to help you put it on the deck,

Lockrite install is pretty easy.

Need to pay attention to the condition of the diff's cross shaft.

Carrier bearings undone and Crown wheel needs to come off carrier so clean bolts and refit with loctite and torque to settings.

i did it myself but yes it is very heavy

i just shuffeled it along the studs until it got to the end, i put a towel on my chest and let teh diff flange come down on my chest very carefully, had overalls on also so i had the diff sitting on my stomache and was on a dolly so i was able to roll out from under the car and put it on the deck, was easy that way, just as easy to get it in

Thanks for the info gentlemen.

I'll think I'll give it a chortle in the next few days.

Then try and crawl up some sweet jumps and maybe get 3 feet of air that time.
