I'm running 235/75x15 (roadies) and 30x9.5x15" (play) on my vit, and am over the high gearing thing, so I'd like to change the diff ratios.
I got three questions.
1)What's available?

99% chance you currently have 5.12, which is the shortest readily available ratio.
some models have 4.88, some 4.6, some 4.3, but if you have a 1.6 manual or 1.6 EFI auto or manual you have 5.12.
Calmini are apparently putting the 5.83 back into production, but we have been hearing that for about 1000 years.
There are 5.38's (I think) available in diesel models in europe, but they won't be easy to find.
Tell us what model you have , we'll be able to tell you if you can go 5.12.
If you already have 5.12, you have just discovered the big vitara drawback.

i have a 89 vitara SWB with 5.12's in it. its a manual, and i haven't done anything with the gearing at all.
i used to run 31" simex ET's, and they were a little bit bigger when they were new and i was doing ok with them on my vit. only low range suffered a bit, but i didn't mind, due to the fact i only usually play in the mud, and hardly on rocks, cos we dont have many rocks to drive on up here.
i was able to do the speed limit and keep up with traffic on the hwy pretty good. i am now running 31" BFG A/T, which are pretty good on the road, but thats about it. i can easily do over 100 clicks on the hwy, but sit on 100km/h at about 3000ish rpm.
i have a 2" exhaust with extractors and a weber 32/36 carby. all other gearing is as stock as it gets. but with the weber, i average about 300km per tank. i don't mind, its not far to places up here.
i drove a 95 SWB vit the other day, was looking at buying it. it was 1.6 EFI, 5 speed man, has air con, and power steer. but it was a bit of a slug. revs out good, and very smooth, compared to mine, bit i thought it was slow. even though it was completely stock.
so just saying, if you just want a little extra for road driving, a good intake and exhaust system can help a bit. but for off road gearing, then gears may be the only answer. even if you are only running 30"s.
