I am considering buying a vx sahara import from japan under $18K 200,000kms Tdi pto winch etc

are there any problems acquiring spare parts in australia for these vehicles? Are there any common probs with these that aren't
usually associated with the aussie 60 series?

I would have thought 18 grand would get you a fairly clean oz-delivered 60 with a 12Ht and a bit of gear on it even though they are overpriced. :o

Thanks for that I have heard about the surf being a problem how ever I was hoping the cruiser would be a different story.

I know some someone how imports cars from japan. He said when he orders there is classes 1,2,3,4,5 1 being crap 5 being exelent. Importer states what class he wants an dthis is the best be says what kms he wants on it . ie car has 200,000 on 95 modle he say 90,000 and the car will arive with 90-95,000 kms on it. Its f****d so be careful.
Hope this help your choice.

All of this "Hard to get parts" bit is just heresay. None of it is fact. Ive had my Surf for over 3Yrs without any problems getting any parts. My Local Toyota part shop said they can get any part needed for the Surf. Some parts however will take a little longer as the will need to be imported from Japan (Same as some Aust released models/Parts)

Dont be afraid of it being an import but I agree with the others that $18K for a 2nd Hand car of that vintage is a bit steep.

it is a good buy, you should get it now before someone else snaps it up!

yeh, all the body and mechanicls is vertiallu the same as the aus spec unit. The electrics would be the hard to find parts.

still wouldnt pay more than 10k for a 60 series though.

www.kobecars.com .... order a sahara 80 series, get it landed here for 10k, spend 3k changing windscreens, seatbelts and side inpact doors if it doesnt already have it...and your driving a t/d auto 80 series with woodgrain towball

My vote wouold be for no,

I know a parts guy at Toyota pretty well, and before I bought I had several long talks with him.

Yes 90% of the rig is the same. But he pointed out several times that it's to 10% that people have trouble with.
He reckons that the 60''s running gear (the same stuff) - esp the trans, diffs etc are just about bulletproof.
The 12ht - well this is a legend of a motor - look how many are well past 500k without a rebuild.
He was saying most of the difficulties are in things like electrics (Being 24v) -fusible links, Also a lot of minor accessory parts were never stocked here.

P.S. Mine's now for sale over here in WA

I've worked on a lot of imported 4 wheel drives from Japan there are a few traps for the unwary,in the case of the imported 60's it has 24 volt electrics (lights, radio ,window motors, wiper motor etc ) the front windows are full glass (no quarter vents) this makes these items difficult to get quickly second hand ,the other big problem can be rust wich I have seen every where on some and nearly none on others.
So before you commit to handing over big bikkies have the vehicle inspected by someone like RAC NRMA etc etc
$18000-00 seems pretty steep , locally delivered '87 to '89 12ht's are getting around $8500-00 to $12000-00 for very good examples. But as has been said an 80's isn't that dear any more.

Along time ago i was looking at one of those imports and was all keen till a few close friends who actually like me got together and put paper cuts between all my fingers and toes and under my eye lids. I guess the message was if you could handle that pain you could own an import cruiser.

You guessed it - I very quickly saw the light and limped myself into a smick 80s that never misses a beat.

I agree why pay that for an import 60 when you can buy an 80.

When I was lookin for my 80 I just missed out on a VX sahara 90 model for 12k
