jai,
the 2.8 ltr 4jb1t is a good engine, if well looked after by the previous owner.
Same engine as in the TF series rodeo.
Some of the import engines have a belt driven cam vs the gear drive in the rodeo, if it has a belt when was it last changed?
The imports have a few extra anti pollution devices on them the rodeos dont.
The injector pumps are good for 260,000 to 280,000 km after which they'll need a rebuild. Injectors should be serviced/changed every 100,000km.
The average 2.8 isuzu craps all over 2.8 diesel in the hilux in power and economy.
They benefit greatly from a 2.5 inch free flowing exhaust and adjustment to the boost aneroid on the injector pump which increases fuel at low rpm ( more fuel= more exhaust gas = higher turbo rpm=more boost= :)) )
This eliminates a dead spot in acceleration just off idle and all but eliminates turbo lag, this makes driving a lot easier.
Fuel consumption varies due to engine condition and how heavy the right foot is but work on between 9.5 and 12 lt per 100km for normal driving and up to 14ltr per 100km towing ( in my case 900kg camper trailer) or soft sand in 4x4. 9.0 lt per 100 km cruiseing at the speed limit.
Fuel consumption really increases over 110km. Most are good for a top speed of about 140 145 km/hr. a sports car they're not.
Cant comment on the auto never used one.

Hope this helps
They do need regular servicing, oil and filter every 5000km, fuel filter 15000 km, tappets every 20000km, timing belt every 100,000km.
