Welding on H233 Diff housing

Whilst cruising on Oodnadatta track a fortnight ago, cracked me rear housing. Five hours on a Sunday in Oodnadatta for old mate to clean it up and mig it. Apparently its mild steel... and not cast.

Have got a chunk of 75mm wide 8mm thick C section to shove up underneath both sides of the centre. All set to go. However, the welding bit is a bit daunting to me. Only have access to stick welders.

If I were to drop oil, slowly pre-heat diff with oxy and then go very dead-set slow at welding the C section with stick welder.... would it work ok and not detract from its current strength, ie, introduce new weak points?
Im kind of frightened a bit of further cracking later...

Andrew E on forum advised: dont bother - go talk to Cheesy / PGS etc.

Any advice from anyone? Basically just wanna hear either a loud 'yeah, go ahead and do it, she'll be apples' or a 'nah, if gonna do it, get it done properly'

if your worried go and talk to a truck/earth moving welder/contracter.

wouldnt cost that much if you get it ready and tacked into place for him. as itd take about 20mins.

goin slow will do more harm than good you will just introduce a crap load of heat, if u want bigger than a 6mm fillet just do a 3 run fillet with 2.5 rods and normal amps, you wont crack mild steel but if u got an oxy u could post heat for a bit, preheating wont really matter not on thin section mild steel and if u weld side to side evenly you will spread the heat evenly, dont just weld one side of the diff, just do small stitchs and alternate, using 8mm is pretty heavy considering ur diff housing would be about 3 mm

That 8mm was a typo. 6mm. That probably is still overkill.
Will sit and have a thinksey about it.
