something broke in the front of my GU

while out at cruiser park i got hung up on a rock. with front wheels at full lock right and the left front off the ground (right front had solid traction) i forgot the air locker was in and a single bang (not excessively loud) came from the front. i have now lost all drive to the drivers side front and only drive to the left front when the locker is in. what could be broken?

for the 5 more min i had the hubs locked in to see what was/wasnt turning, no crunching/grinding noises were heard (typical of C.V's) and it drives on the road straight, when the hubs are locked and turned by hand still no noises (dont hear the star gears in the centre turning like the passenger side does either).

could it be axle? is there something in the centre that can break without making anymore noise and still sending drive to 1 wheel? is there something in the locker mechanism (arb) itself that could break?

cheers

its either a broken CV or a broken axle or stub axle on that side. the only other thing it could be is a broken locking hub, but wat you described is typical of a CV, and they are usually the first to go.

Your going to have to pull it down and have a look.

just running factory gu hubs. are GQ stronger? the locking part of the hub is all in good condition (pulled that off and checked). the reason i asked is cause ive seen and heard countless cvs break and they have all been loud and made horrible noises when they continue rolling. mine didnt do that.
guess will find out when it gets pulled down. already ordered a new axle and cv so hopefully nothing in the centre itself.

Sounds more like axle broke. The two cv's and the countless others I have seen smashed. Have caused the steering to bind up. Where as it sounds like yours steers fine just no power. And since you hub seems fine.
Its time for a new axle. If its sheared the end of in the CV I have know idea how you get them out. As I only know of a way to get a good axle out, usually involves a worn CV being turned into complete rubbish though.

ive broken CVs before that haven affected steering lock... depends on the break... i reckon you have either broken the stub axle that comes off the CV Bell or the axle. either way you will replace it with the new gear you have ordered one way or another.

sounds like a cv to me, my mk drove fine. drove for quite a few hours camped the night put the hubs in in the morning and had a real bad clunk noise. this is all out of the blue never heard a thing before hand so it just goes to show the can go when ever, theres a lot of force put them when a locker is on and your giving it to it.

yeh will find out next week anyway wat it is, i was just curious as it is new to me too. its a ute so has manual hubs (would never have auto) and ill keep in mind if i break a gu hub that the gq's are stronger. handy bit of advice. thanks for the feedback everyone. will let you know how it goes

I'm pretty sure it's only the GU 'auto hubs' that you'll have dramas with, not the GU freewheeling hubs. I busted the Auto hubs in the wagon, changed them to GU freewheeling hubs & never had any probs with them ;)

If you need a hand pulling the cv & axle out, give me a yell.
