Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Gday , a mate of mine is set on trying to install intermittant windscreen wipers on his fj40 - he is currently trying to install a vk commodore aftermarket wiper delay box and switch but then looses normal speed and due to the 40 not having self returning wiper motor the arms stop in the middle of the screen .
Anyone have any ideas on how he could set them up
i suggested a pediometer switch on the main wiper switch so that he could just slow the normal speed down but not sure how to wire it up .

Is it normal for the 40 not to have self-parking wipers?

That's a bit surprising to me; anyway I think that you would need to sort out a parking mechanism before you can get intermittent wipers to work.

im interested to see how this turns out. my zooks wipers arent exactly the best

Like I said, I honestly can't see how it could be made to work unless you have self-parking wipers. Are there any bolt-in self-parking wipers, maybe from a slightly different cruiser model or something?

Self parking wipers can be "simulated" by adding a second normally closed switch in parallel with the factory switch. Mount the second switch somewhere (this is the tricky bit) where it is "opened" by the wiper mechanism when the wipers are "parked."

If you can do this, the factory on/off switch starts the wipers running, then the new switch keeps them running until they return home. If the factory switch is still on, they'll keep going...

Then, your "intermittent" system only needs to pulse the wipers on for long enough to close the contacts in your new switch.

40's should be self parking. Mine was.

... so once you sort the self-parking, the intermittent aspect is very easy.

Well, I have just sussed this out for another older vehicle that didn't originally have intermittent wipers.

It's fairly easy, as said you'll need self-parking wipers for starters.

Once you've got that, it's case of wiring in the right kind of relay. I have sussed it out using one from a discovery, and also using a relay from a Ford Spectron van, which is actually mazda shite.

The Disco one is better. It's also interchangeable with a later one from VWs and various other cars which is "settable", that is you can use the intermittent wiper switch to set the delay from 2.5 to 45 seconds. Not that valuable to me but at least you know it can be done.

These all depend on a wiper motor that sends +12V down a wire when the wipers are moving, then sends ground down the same wire when they park. This afaik is the case with most wiper motors.

u can get a switch that goes on the low speed side has a knob on it and when knob is switched off it is normal low speed when on the knob is on variable wipers cool ha don't know were u get it from a car i bought had one was def after market took it off before i sold it prob still got somewhere
