Auto tranny cooler size? and fittings?

I have recently bought a Hilux fitted with a Commodore V6 and auto tranny.
The previous owner had ignored an auto trans leak for a long time by the looks. :roll: One side of the ute underneath has oil and shit right back to the rear diff!
I started ripping into it today and found that the rubber lines that go into the auto trans cooler both had loose hose clamps.
The problem is these hose clamps are in a bugger of a spot to get to and needed the bullbar, grill, and cooler removed to tighten them.
So Im wondering if there is any other type of fitting or clamp I can use to stop this happening again?
Would a crimp on type hose clamp like this be better?

Also the cooler is fairly small, about 300 x 200mm is this sufficient to keep the auto cool under heavy comp use?
It wont be doing a lot of high speed stuff but I do plan on giving it a fair thashing :twisted: .

Paul those clamps are ok id prefer normal but they do work.

As for the cooler you may want to look at using an old air con condensor for it they work a treat you dont want the tranny overheating in comp use mate.

You can fit one if front if it hasnt got 1 already mounted.

Yeah I know I have used them before on air lines and they have worked well.
Normal will probably do the job I just dont want to be going to all this farkin around to often but if I get some new hose clamps and do them up nice and tight it will probably be sweet for a long time.
It has been leaking so bad that the bottom radiator hose has deteriorated and gone soft and swolen from the constant auto trans fluid on it :shock: .

I've link two coolers together and have used double screw type clamps on every connection.

Make sure you replace the hose aswell. 9 times out of ten the reason the clamps need tightening is because the hose has contracted and hardened. Tightening the clamp is temporary.
Worm drive hose clamps will suffice. The tridon type ones with the slots in the are to be avoided as they cut into the hoses.
As for the cooler, for comp use it can't be too big. An A/C condensor would be good. What ever you use make sure you can breathe through it easily. If you wouldn't be happy to breathe through it for ten minutes then it's too restricted.

on my GQ ute, TB42 auto, i run 2 PWR auto trans coolers hooked up in sieries, i also went to the extreem of mounting a 9inch thermo to each of them,

also sounds like space up front is also an issue!
on my comp rig(same eng auto TRAN as you)
originaly got standard commy aircon cooler &
16"thermo that comes with it factory, modded inlet
& outlet pipes,then mounted it on the tray,heaps better
only leaving radiator & pwr steer cooler up front..
now new mod requires more room for winch & also want
radiator out of mud,now afactory AU falcon radiator & its
thermo fan setup sit on tray & oil coolers back up front
if mud,a stick or a crash is going to kill your coolers,you can
bypass them & keep going,but you cant bypass your engine
cooling system.. look if you want to chat some time id be happy
to fill you in on cheep modsfor cooling that work 0407911808

Saw your rig in Dirtcomp mag mate. Nice write up, she looks like a beast.

I plan on mounting a Falcon Rad in the back eventually when I start the serious mods and running a big auto cooler and a big cooler for the steering hydaulics in the front.
For now I have just stayed with the little cooler that was in there and just thown some new hose clamps on.
