It depends on how good of a set you want to run.

We run a garmin gps hooked to laptop running OziExplorer, this gives us detailed topographical maps that move as we move (ie. Moving map.) you can use a chart plotter but they do get expensive. The laptop is just your average household laptop nothing special, but it needs at least 40g of hard disk space to store the maps on.

But if you just want a basic set up you can buy any old handheld GPS to get started.

What is your budget, because that really dictates your setup.

All topos for NSW and natmaps, sometimes use natmaps for the larger coverage on one map, you find the natmaps are better for big nav stages.

Myself and 3 others just used a very basic magellan, paper maps and scale ruler.......9th and 6th position, everyone else was using laptops

Just saying you can have a go with just a GPS :)

Absolutely agree, we did the pirahna pursuit two years ago with just a GPS and a map and came fourth, so you don't neccesserily need the full set up.

It depends on your budget.....but you can certainly compete with just handheld GPS.

I do all most all of the navruns etc, ie pajero challenge, pursuit

And yes i use the gps for conversions & pinpointing but for navigation between points & planning your course, nothing beats a good old map!!! So don't worry about spending big bucks on one unless you've got it to spend, The simplest setup might be a Magellan Meridian & learn how to use it ;)

The rest is secret

X2 Andrew ;)

Over the last five years i have had a first, two seconds and another 6 top ten positions in navruns. This year ran fifth in the pajero challenge. Last year third, this year second in the cliff hanger and got a third outright in a nav stage in the OBC all with nothing more than a GPS and knowledge.

The point is wether YOU know or want to know how to navigate or wether you want to BUY a piece of equipment that will navgate you and you drive it.
If you know how to navigate then any GPS will do for a navrun (we won and came second with a hand held GPS!).
Now that we're over that.
Depending on how many dollars you want to spend.
For a cheap compact in car GPS you can't go past a magellan FX324. Can't buy 'em new but you can pick them up for around 5 hunjy second hand. Up from that you'd go a garmin 2000C, 1000 bucks, once again second hand. Next you'd go a 3000C. Coupla grand for colour i think but they are the ducks guts.
If you want to be bothered by a big ass piece of crap unneccessary laptop shitting you to tears all weekend then get a GPS of any sort. If you driver is that way inclined mounted the GPS on his side so he has an idea or the direction your travelling as well. Helps with directions.
If dollars are an issue then look at an old Garmin GPS 128. That's be a great one to start with. They are sooooooooooo simple and doing everything you want. Coupla hunjy should get you one of those.
Hope this has helped,
Cheers Dan

Here is internet photo of the setup, i'll dig around for some of my own.
It can swivel and pivot to some good postition so you can easily use solo or with a passenger.
Mines just running through a old Garmin II+ GPS but you could even use a GPS mouse.

I use one of these little items hooked directly to a laptop running Oziexplorer.

Fantastic and seems to be very accurate. Also have a hand held for back up.

In my opinion you cant beat a laptop (or any computer) running ozi explorer. Great program, easy to use and does everything you could ever want for the Navrun events.

The line was long at GPS Australia so I jumped on the list at 4WDM forum as soon as it came along ;)
The NSW toppo I had originaly torrented but the disk came with 1:100,000 being correct as the torrent had coords out by 100m.
I couldn't find the VIC topo but seeded them when I got them on disk.

Your a ledgend in my books

not really, I made a set of 1:25k for tas, but received hate-mail from some GIS progect manager in the tas govt who had a different take on the license agreement than I did, but I decided not to risk it so never passed them around.
I'm still looking for a decent data source for qld and other states, but not holding my breath.

You can buy it from oziexplorer.com.au .. it's not real exy for what you get IMHO .. I used a torrent version, but soon paid the $$ for a legit setup (now to get it for my PDA)
