Hilux transfer shift problem

G'day, just wondering if anybody has had or knows whats going on with my transfer case? About a year ago it had a short time where it wouldn't mesh into 4H or 4L without about 3km of forward speed, and would only shift back into 2H at about 5km of reverse speed. Then it stopped it for a while, then it became temprimental when I was driving it alot in the wet season. But now I can't even get it to shift into low range. 
This is my second 4wd, I owned an MQ patrol before and rebuilt the case on that, but haven't really had a look at the hilux transfer internals, how does it select, etc?
Any input appreciated.
Also its an 81 hilux 4speed, gear t/case, 4.88's, f/locker, with a holden 253 blue , turning 36's. If that helps paint a picture.
