couple of newbie questions about tyres and rims

G'day, long time listner, first time caller,
got a '94 swb and it's time for new tires
this is my first fourby and i'm not too knowledgeable on the subject, i do try and search most things but computers and i aren't the best of friends.
So... here it comes, i've got a set of 16" CSA alloys on the zook atm, they look alright, but dunno how practical they are, tyres are slicks (to be honest thery're just 225/55R16 commodore tyres)
am looking for a decent set of rubber as i do intend to use the sierra for what it was designed for.....so what can i fit?
What works well and isn't a pain with a stock setup?
Will i be better off with smaller rims?
How wide a tyre?
current use 85% road
dunno exact specs of CSA's atm as their covered in mud
do have a full set of stock rims (one dented allong with my arse end courtesy of my mates front bar).....apparently a sierra can stop a 40 series landcruiser
thanks in advance for any help or advice offered
