the U.S market got a 2.5ltr petrol motor in their wrangles....if your thinking one of them then import one from the states, we only got the 4ltr inline 6.

Search for stuff on Diesel XJs, they have a few issues. Believe its to do with the head design.
I Think the KJ was a 2.5 as well?, I know all the new stuff is 2.8 (except GC, they are V6
). I believ all the 2.5 Diesels used in Jeeps were Italian sourced, and the Italians are not renowned for Diesels. The V6 is a Merc sourced I think, and is a nice motor.

If its from an early 90's jeep then steer clear as it will be the horrible italian VM engine thats prone to overheating and destroying cylinder heads - they have 4 individual heads !

yeh thats the one, early 90s

it can't be early 90's as the first 2.5 Turbo Diesel jeep did not get releast till '97' i know because i have one
yes they are the VM make and in my opinion they are a fine diesel, yes they are made in Italy, and while the Italians may not know much about diesels VM is a sister company to Detroit Diesel, who makes a bloody good motor, yes i can say these have a small issue with over heating, i know because i cooked mine (but this was my own fault)
IMHO these are a fantsic motor with great torque from memory 383Nm in high range and when in low 1st at 1800rpm anything up to 1200Nm
you will find most people that will bitch and moan about these have little or nothing to do with them, those that DO have them and know about them will back me up, i know a few people that have cooked their VM motor and have looked at a million and one other motors to replace it, but never found anything that will do waht it does, i know i have looked around and i will wait till i can get anouther VM for mine despite the cost
but if anyone knows of one aroud for sale please PM me and let me know, i am very keen to get another one into my jeep ASAP

it was due to have all the cooling system flushed but i was putting it off, they tend to run hot mainly on hot days when you use the aircon
sadly for me i was running late for a meeting it was 40+ degrees and i saw it getting hot but thought i was not far and 'she'll be right' yeah i know famous last words
so all in all mine was due to lack of maintenence, poor judgement, and pushing it when i should of just pulled over :( but no point crying now, whats done is done, but i do know that if you look after these motors they will look after you, hence i will pay the money and get another one

Its the individual head design that gets me! Why?
I've just read bad things about engines that have individual head or even block arrangements. I've even heard that some engines follwing this sort of design philosophy require consistant retensioning of bolts to avoid coolant and/or engine oil seeping between components and pushing them apart causing missalignment. This could be histerical grabage invented by someone, however I do recall reading it somewhere. Also is this VM diesel a OHC? because overhead with indivdual heads would be a nightmare to disasemble.
The cooling issues as you Moses said can be avoided by intelligent maintenance; anyway this reputation doesn't seem to be specific to the diesel XJ (never had cooling issues with our 4.0 though).

the VM in question is the Diesel, and i know a few people with these and i have never heard of the heads needing retensioning
and yes it all comes down to matinence, as i have admitted it was my lack of that cause my problem, so no fault but my own, the motor was great

bonar59 what about a 2.5 turbo deisel from a pajero, would cost bugger all and there a small compact motor that pushes 2 ton of lwb pajero around a lot better than you 1.3 pushes your sierra (only just) but loose a 1.4 ton and see what happens

Grab it if its a goer, sell it to someone with a dead one, buy a Vitara motor for your Zook

thats good advice for shore, but i dont think its his plan, i think he is trying to think outside the circle, which is why i suggested the above i have consisded the same, but i have too heavy a right foot for such a suggestion. but may work for him.

not just LWBs,
the 4d56 is a good small motor but i think the 4m40 would be better. or 4m41 even better

i was useing lwb as an example of the what were built for they also come in th swb. i dont know what there called as 4m40-4m41 etc.. but the later ones come out 2.8 turbo with intercooler same as delica vans and to look out there a small motor for a 2.8ltr i can see one in a sierra engine bay just the gear box transfer wouldn't work i think might be wrong it may also marry uo to some rwd mitsabishi gearbox then adapt to sierra transfer.
if there the same as the V6 pajero bell housing then they would be interchanable with the gear box from the misabishi GTO twin turbo rwd sports cars or easier yet a 2wd triton bang done for dinner.
thats what you have to do boner59 intercooled 2.8 turbo diesel from a 2wd triton plenty around and at importers. good luck with your new zoojero or pazooker lol.

4m40 is the 2.8 and 4m41 is the 3.2 Did engine.
the 4d56 (2.5) also came in intercooled and non intercooled versions

is the 3.2 still a 4 cylinder and are they around the same size or much bigger
Posted: Fri Aug 31, 2007 4:04 pm
by j-top paj
cant comment on physical size but the 3.2 is definately a 4cyl.
the 4m40 and 4m41 are both from the same family of engines.
i beleive there have been a couple people swaping the Did into the gen 2 pajeros with the 4m40 as its a easy conversion
