if you want to spend the money there are plenty of people around who build tough rb30's for the vl and skyline boys.

Id be looking at a TD42 diesel reliability, and awsome offroad.

I know Dieseltec in victoria have built several awsome rigs maybe get in touch with them they might have a contact in syd or could build and freight it to you.

Have a search you will find nothing but good things about them

dont waste your time with a rb30det, it will be useless for offroad situations.
stick with a TD42T and work it a little

Both can work, there is a totally different driving experience with either. I like the TB42 turboed as it gives a few more cubes for off boost torque and can delived V8 eating performance at reasonable boost levels. On my dyno a V8 VT series one Holden 5.0L is good for 125-130 rear wheel kW and a TB42 on 12 psi about 150. The turbo makes more torque and from lower rpm. It takes a lot more dollars to get a GENUINE 150 rear wheel Kw from a TD42, (engine, pump, injectors, turbo, intercooler)

Do you even know what you just said, are you aware what engine you just quoted? I have mates with hybrid's and there making well over 500RWKW

yeh a rb30det is what i quoted, im sure you have mates that have engines that produce well ovwer 500kw, but where is the useable power created? when your wheeling, do you rev the crap outa your engine? or do you let the low down torque and gears do all the work? me personally, i hardly go above 1500-2000 rpm when wheeling..

Not just 4WDing really, most serious driving is about torque in the right places. 500kW is useless if it's only in the 6500-6600 rpm band and you have fark all everywhere else in the rev range.

rb30 with a twin cam head either rb25 or 26. good mod for drag cars, cheaper than a stroker kit for a 25/26. i'm pretty sure the fastest 'street' skyline has a rb30det.

Does your 4500 petrol get good useable torque at those rev's?

at 1500-2000 rpm?

sooooo.... if a 500kw RB30 only had that much power high in the rev range, how much would it have at say 1500 - 2000? It would surly be more than a stock tb42 or td42 would at the same revs, would it not? If so then why the hell would that not be usable?

But it you are going to turbo something, turbo a tb42.

got a mate running 7psi in his tb42t and he only gets 250kms for 2 gas tanks and they are 170 usable and thats max.so y bother

Yep. You said when wheeling you rarely go above 2000 rpm. In your sig it says yours is a 4.5 petty?
What they like with low rev torque and whats the bore and stroke of them?

Id love to have a bush pig with a twin cam rb30! It would be the best fun

not sure about the bore and stroke but i think its 96x96

i also have diff and xfer gears so that helps too

Quoting myself:
A TB45 is really just a TB42 that's been bored out an extra 3.5mm on each cylinder. Same stroke, basically the same everything, same two valves per cylinder, same pushrod technology.

Given that an actual TB45 is only ~30HP better than a TB42, I can't see swapping a head gaining you much at all. I mean most of the extra 30hp must come from the extra 0.3 litres of displacement, probably little or none of it comes from any differences in the head.

It's the TB48 that is really an improvement in the series, with some actual new technology like double overhead cams, 24 valves, and variable valve timing instead of the 12-valve pushrod arrangement of the 4.5 and 4.2

There does seem to be a bit of a myth out there that a TB45 head can turn a TB42 into a TB45, but the difference is in the bore, not in the head.

TB42: bore 96mm, stroke 96mm
TB45: bore 99.5mm, stroke 96mm
TB48: bore 99.5mm, stroke 102mm

I would be looking at the 4.2 over the 3.0 for the gearbox strength.
