Possibly caused by the battery leaking acid at some stage, acid eats away at paint, exposed metal then rusts causing hole.

also if you get water round the battery, the mixture of gases coming out the battery and water can cause some fully sic corrosion. I bet your terminals looked like they had a severe skin disease.

always a good idea to keep it clean around your battery/s
i usually take mine out once a year or so and give it a good clean under there.
also when you put it back, make sure you tighten it well to prevent the battery from moving around and rubbing on the metal underneath

I cleaned mine up when I got the car, then I bitumen painted the whole battery tray area. Then I put vaseline on the battery terminals.
Now I run a sealed gel battery, no problems

Not sure but i suppose chlorine gas has never been good for anything. Ever now and then when your under there give it a good shot of bicarb in hot water, netutralises the battery acids, protects the terminals and paint i suppose!

U mean hydrogen. Chlorine is from mixing acid and bleach.
