what bellhousing is required for the surf R151 gearbox to bolt onto the 2J engine? and will the safari tuff clutch be strong enough to sustain the power of the 2J

Clutch should do if it will suit the 2j flywheel. i know when i had my torry with celica box behind it there was only one off the shelf kit to suit and it wasn't much better than std ended up getting custom one done cost around 300 mark. think r and w series boxes are the same look back 1 or 2 pages there may be something on it or search because i remember the bolting up being Q'd before

i think it will be a custom bellhousing, as far as i know the 2j only came with a 6 speed manual or the auto, so no bellhousing from factory to suit an r series box.
try castlemaine rod shop or dellows.
what about the getrag 6 speed with divorced t-case (too many dollars???), or the auto????

You ncan use the auto belhousing, which is pretty common, and an adapter plate.
Check this build out, goes really well too apparently

damn i thought they did use an r series from factory and the w57 they kept talking about was a screw up. guessing 1J doesnt bolt up either? damn. what about an RB25 or 26 bolting to an RB30 patrol box?

Use the bellhousing/flywheel/clutch setup from a 1JZ that was fitted with an R154 ie, a JZA70 Supra, JZZ30 Soarer or a JZX81 Chaser. Bolt it all together, drive away!

I think you will find the r151 and r154 have different lenght input shafts, therefore different lenght bellhousings.

indeed they do, i think you can however take the input from the 1j gearbox and put it into the runner box.
i know that castlemain make a bell to suit a 1jzgte to 4runner r gearbox, so if they are the same as a 2j then may be the go.
there is a buildup on 4wd monthly forum, a hilux with 1jz and r series hilux box. might be worth a look to see what bell he used.
on a side note, why not the 1jzgte??? electrics and turbo setup is much simplier meaning less things to go wrong. still has plenty of go.

the guy was a good salesman, made me want the 2J more than a root. im still interested in the 1J but i was more interested in the 2 when i asked the question.
ill check out castlemaine rod shop and dellows and see what they have to offer.

use a standard manual 2jz bellhousing, shave 6mm off each end and get a spigot bearing spacer from marks add. and the r 151 will bolt straight up. as 4 clutches i would get anything cheap cause it wont last long when u get some power into it,
