i was wondering if any one has put a ife power steering box on an older hilux and done away with the j arm is it worth it

Looks something like this when it's tacked in place best to use 80series pitman arm or get a flat one from about half way down the page http://www.trail-gear.com/steering.html
also need at least new draglink and hi steer or a double or fliped arm it's not just a bolt up job Image

So that one is donr without a dropped spring hanger .... How did it turn out .. I have the bits to do rears up front and the ability to build\install new spring hanger (need to make up some stronger bullbar mounts anyway so I figure I will make plates for both chassis rails that reimforce the steering box mount as well as provide bracing to the spring hangers and make some strong bb mounts ...

Few Questions:

I notice the pictured lux has a body lift, can the IFS box be installed without a bodylift? (to do with steering shaft angle etc)

Can you get rid of that 'torque rod' off of the front diff with crossover cant you? Because its not push pull lengthways steering anymore.

I've seen a couple of High steer crossover kits for sale by different mod shops, but they dont mention legalities. Can this stuff be engineered (QLD for me), as the vehicle I'm considering is currently stripped and de-regoed so it will have to be set up from the start to be legal.

ALso, does the extra flex associated with crossover give any scrubbing problems, or will standard bumpstops deal with that? (assuming around 30 or 31 tyres for now anyway).

Flu meds for me too :? , I cant think straight.

You can get it Engineered if you find the right engineer. But I think Qld Transport still won't like it if you went over the pits (thats if they pick it up)

The arms will have to be solid cast or CNC machined ones to be Engineered though.

Box mounts got tacked in then it had drop hanger done wasn't going to worry about it but one come up cheap so it got done it'd be interesting to see if people have had it done without bodylift as i trimed the front of the body a bit could have bent it up a bit but looks neater cut will try remember to get pic's toomorrow. All i can say for steering wise is mine was fairly flex in the front and the drop draglink hit the Flat style u bolts a fair bit and in the end it shiting me to tears and now it doesn't lock up and steers good without the binding also allows for front u bolt flip

Looks like a different approach would have to be taken to mount it without bodylift. Reckon the upper cylindrical part of the steering box would fowl on the lower front part of the body, and too much trimming there would seriously comprimise body strength. Maybe mount the box further back, and use a shorter arm out the bottom???

Its not my car this will be done on, Its Dads and I'm reasonably sure he doesn't want bodylift. If anyone knows how to do it without bodylift, please feel free to enlighten me. No rush where still rebuilding the axles, and where working from bottom to top!

The bolt hole at the bottom towards the back of the car will line up with the threaded hole in the chassis. With this there it should fit with not too much panel work I think. :?

I wouldn't run a shorter pitman arm it'd be harder to steer as you won't get as much leaverage. can't remember which hole we lined it up with.

Is that the bolt hole in the steering box? Or the pitman arm hole?

I realise my bit about shorter pitman arm was a stupid idea; I'm still got the flu :cry: (excuse, excuse :oops: ).

The other difference with not having the B/L, is the difference in height of the box WRT the steering column. Shouln't be a problem I hope, but to do with length of steering shaft...

I was the steering box hole. I just put a 2wd pitman arm on to run high steer. The 80 series was too long and the rods x over each other. The 2wd one is 140mm C2C where the 80 series is 185mm C2C. The steering is alot easier with the shorter one. Picked one up for $65. Just got to file out the two keys in the pitman arm spline. Still get full turn.

Another option may be to get a box there the pitman arm swings in front of the box some one on here will know or take a walk around the local wreckers

I think I read somewhere that the 60 series steering box as a whole unit has the forward swinging pitman arm. Might be worth looking into also. Passed the info on to Dad, he's already said that a different steering box might be plausible; just easier if he can keep it reasonbly mainstream.
