can anyone clarify or confirm or correct that a vitara gearbox bolted to the 1.6 will go into a sierra with the transfer removed and jack shaft from the sierra fitted to output shaft of the gearbox. i think this is what i saw in a zook many moons ago when i was less informed and was not too sure what i was looking at. i'm thinking if it was that easy more people would have done it

It is the case for the trimatic I have sitting under my 1.3, and Mugginsmoo's AW4 auto.
It will require a custom rear cover plate and some sort of seal/carrier bearing. I agree, I think this is a better idea than an engine to gearbox conversion.

3 ways -
Vitara trimatic or AW-4 used with a vitara engine conversion plate "back to front." Shifting the AW-4 would take a control box or a atand alone version like that used in diesel/carby hiace/hilux's
A G13BB 4 speed auto from a jimny (but best done with a whole jimny engine/gearbox due to shifting problems)
A japanese market 3 speed auto from an import. I believe they are fully mechanical. Mud4B has had some experience with this gearbox from memory.

don't think i was looking at an auto and was definatly 1600. it was for sale at the gate at tt05 and was advertised with vtara 1.6 but the gearbox looked just like a standard box with no tranfer( no extension housing) looked funny but i suppose it still had a seal and bearing

come have a look at my vit box if you want, it doesnt have the tcase on it I know it wont fit in a 1L tunnel. I ended up getting an adaptor & using a 1.3l box

to fit the AW4 into a 1.3L sierra you will need to widen the tunnel by 60mm on the drives side and 50mm on the pasengers side.
the widening will have to go all the way back to where the seats mount on the floor.
its a lot of work and best done with the body off the chassis.

thanks Aeren, i might do that. But if i have to carve up the tunnel i will also use the 1.3 box. just trying to get it all thought out before i start this time!

Is the Vit 3spd and 4spd different in size?? eg 3spd smaller (narrow?)
I would think they would be the same length.

Three speed is the same length as the manual. Four speed is about 2.5" longer or so.
When they went 4 speed the crossmembers (in fact the whole chassis changed as it mounts differently.
If I recall correctly, the auto and manual have different transfer levers to make up the difference without changing the console.
The 3 speed won't clear the sierra floor without widening either, and without a 2" BL, the sump is very close to the floor. I have done this before.
