i got the wobbles

No i dont have a strange illness.

Now firstly i have had a front allignment and the tyres have been ballanced only on saturday. Both front hubs were rebuilt only 3000kms ago with seals and everything, bushes are all ok and everything is tight. and i still have it.

As im driving every now and then the entire car starts to get the wobbles. I mean its so bad sometimes you have to step on the brakes and slow right down to get it to stop. I can even see the front drivers wheel wobbling if i stick my head out the window and look (mouth open and barking like a dog gets weird looks from other motorists) :D :D

Any ideads what could be causing this?

Thanx

Oh this was happening b4 the new bar also.

suspension mode are RUF, extended shackles, diff is forward 30mm, shock mounts are lifted 4omm and im running ranco shocks.

I had this problem , do you have a steering damper with a return to centre spring , and where is it located , also what degree are your kingpins at , mine where at 4 degrees and now they are 2 degrees and now its gone , also are you getting any sideways movement in the extended shackles , do you have vitara power steering , is there any play in the box , and it occurs after hitting a bump at certain speeds or all the time , cheers Paul.

wobble seems to be worst at about 60kmh. steering dampner is stock. springs are ok.
steering is as tight as its always been
got no idea what degrees king pins are at but they have no slop.
will check u-bolts again

This has only appeared since springs were repaired after i bent one 6months ago and has slowly been getting worse. alignment helped a bit

I use a bevel square that has a protractor on it and a spirit level to check the king pin angle , with the bigger tyres , they make it worse , also maybe try fitting a steering dampner to the link betwwen the wheels , that fixed mine along with the 2 degree king pins , also with the rear up front this pushes the diff forward and drops your front pinion down at the rear , you might need some wedges , make sure you tack weld them to the diff housing to avoid the diff moving , Cheers Paul.

I vote castor is the problem. Sounds the same as what mine was doing, at the same speed. Rotate the diff so you angle the pinion further upwards. In a nutshell anyway.

My 2c is free, but non-refundable if I'm wrong.

wouldn't be wheel bearings would it? mine picked up that wobbling habit on the way home on the freeway after a weekend's worth of hard wheeling and when I jacked the front end up the drivers side wheel had some play in it. haven't had a chance to do anything about it yet, it's parked in the shed til next weekend.

i'm with 4130

mines due some wheel bearings this weekend, personally i blame mud for causing most of my recent issues....

has the same symptoms, although i have found that accelerating hard to about 70 seems to settle it back down again, till i hit the next chopped up bit of road.

mine used to do that when i changed back to little tyres a while ago.
the tyres had been sitting in the shed for ages and had somehow got little
stones or the tyre has been disitigrating and left little bits to rattle around,
and as soon as i went over a bump they would get out of alignment and wobble like mad.

check driveshafts are tight (not wobbling)

and make sure theres no mud caked in your rims! (this used to always happen to me).

You could jack the rear up and bring her to 60km/hr and see if it still wobbles - that would eliminate/highlight anything in the front end... just be careful it doesnt jump off the jack!!!

havent had a chance to look at it yet properly. The wobble is only sometimes there. sometimes its ok. but othertimes it terrible. Springs are straighe and flat (RUF on non lifted springs. )bushes are new excepr rear bush but that is ok.( no excessive play) , tyres are clean and ballanced but missing some pieces of side lugs (always bee like that) shackles are tight but dont have a center brace, both front knuckles were rebuilt not long agoand wheel bearings were ok. outer was replaced and inner was still ok.

will have to check pinion angle but i think its close to what it should be.

The only items in question are the tyres as they are getting old and very trail torn. will swap them about to see if it stops.

Thanx for the ideas will play about on the weekend.

check the bolts at either end, also check the bolts to the steering box disc, as i wen i had the same sorta problem these were the 2 causes

oh - a busted engine mount caused me vibrations once too!

dude when ya change wheel bearings ya change the inner and outer at the same time.

Mine has a habit of getting some small vibrations (the shakes) through the whole car at higher speeds, but only on some bitumen surfaces. Dads does similar, though not quite as severly. We dont have wobbling wheels though, and its not so severe to warrant braking.

I've put it down to harmonics, the engine revs and the road wavelength (really frequency) becoming similar in magnitude. Usually it does it in 5th around 90-100 km/h; If I change it back to 4th not a problem; and as I said only on some road surfaces. I believe mine does it worse than Dads because my tyre walls are far stiffer and transmit the road patterns more.

does it happen just after hitting a bump?

Longer shackles are stuffing your castor up, and causing tyre shimmey because of the lack of natural return to center that castor gives.

The steering will have quite a large "dead zone".

Would a HD stearing dampner correct this?

Check your castor , 2 degrees should be good and put a steering dampner on the tierod , Cheers Paul.

gonna start checking everything from the start. swapped drivers tyres front to back and will see . then do passenger side.

Ive had RUF for ages now and it never did this untill a few months ago. If it was due to castor angle then wouldnt it have done it ever since the RUF went in?????

done a bit of driving tonight and found the following.

wobble starts ar about 4okm/h and is worst at 60. calms down at 80 but is still slightly present. tyres are not the problem as swapped them about without change. Steering is tight and has usual play. All tie rod ends are good. No slop on wheel bearings or kingpins.

Deffinately gotta be the pinion angle. looks to be pointing up on more angle than front shaft. And t/case has been lifted 15mm.

Could someone post up detailed instructionson how to measure and adjust pinion angle. what i would need to do it. Where do i get the wedges from? what size etc

maybe the springs are just sagged??

sierra's been down to pedders this morning and camber, toe in, and castor are all within acceptable tollerances. the only thing that they found was the left nuckle has a "notchy feel to it when wheel is turned when steering is disconected from it.
gonna pull it down and look at it today.

here is a scan of their report . tell me if you see anything out of place with the settings.

Everything seems close to what it should be.

Just looking at your front springs in your other post , they are kinked or bent and your castor looks way out , did they comment on your springs at all because the way they are bent in the photo would indicate why this woobble problem has appeared gradually getting worser , you might need some new front springs , Cheers Paul.
