Looks like a relay of sorts.

it's a driving light relay with a separate set of contacts for each light.

it could be on your headlight or high beam circuit, to reduce the current through the combination switch. trace the wires and see where they go - or pull one of the fuses out of it and cycle all your lights and see what, if anything, doesn't work.

Yep, also found with one side running high beam, one running low beam. In fact they are usually called a headlight relay on the packaging, I think.

I don't think they are really worth $40, I paid $16 for one from a place in Coburg.

Yep. A high low switchable relay. Very hard to set up on a cruiser with negative switching.
