Schwitzer is borg-warner now.

with a few diesel turbos they can only spool to a certain boost. the turbo might be one of those.... or it is from an external gated turbo

A lot of diesel engines dont run Wastegates. They just use the fuel supply to regulate how much boost they produce. This is very common in large truck engines. As for this on a GQ im sorry i cant answer if you will need an external gate or not. Im sure there are plenty of guys here that will be able to answer this though.

A non wastegated turbo has a smaller operating range of flow. The cummins boys love them, but they're normally dealing with a rev limit of 2600-3200rpm
With a wastegate you can use a smaller housing to get more low end boost, then use the wastegate to still pass enough exhaust gas at higher rpm.
The non wastegated (free floating) turbos will create more and more backpressure (and boost) as the revs rise. The housing is normally sized so neither of those (boost or backpressure) gets into a dangerous zone.
If it's a suitable size, then your mate can run an external wastegate to control boost/backpressure.

Usually non wastgates turbo and more detailed sized coz are specific rated for exhaust flow from a specific engine ..
You can buy a non wastegated turbo for your engine and it gonna make full bost at close to your engine red line ..
But to run it in a diferent engine I recomend
1. boost gauge
2. EGT pyro gauge
With those you can determinate how much boost and EGT you get with the turbo as stock as it come .. if have to much boost .. run a external wastegate.
If are to low boost arent for your engine .. ( maybe to large cmpresor or turbine, trim inducer etc .. )
Did you know where this turbo come ..?
