ok guys, this may sound dodgy, but i need a second opion. i have an old horizontal drill press (bowling ball drilling machine :D ), it takes a no2 mortis taper and i was thinking of useing it as a tube notcher, heres the dodgy bit... i was think'n of machining a no2 mortis drill, to use as a hole saw arber. for example, cut off fluted section, machine a step and thead it as per hole saw. any one think doing this with a high speed steel drill bit is a bad idea?

Part it of where the flute ends , drill a hole up the guts the same size as a holesaw arbour and use some allen head screws tapped in the side to hold the arbour in , you will chew through shitloads of arbours when notching as they arn't designed for sideways movement , Cheers Paul.

or u could just use a drop saw or cold saw and cut the notch by hand ;) ... saves a lot of money

mortis is Latin for death
Morse is engineering for a type of taper ;)

Just get a milling cutter with a morse taper and wack it in
Using a cross slide set a decided angle feed to tube to the cutter
Hole saws are cheap but wear (blunt) quickly, a milling cutter will last a heck of a lot longer

Works very similar to this set up (but this one still uses bodgey holesaws)

This is how we do it at work, with a big @rsed bridgeport mill and RMR roughing cutters of various sizes. With this setup, you can rotate the tube, vice and mill head to almost any angle to get what you're after. When you're coping tubes all the time like we are it's the only way to do it ;)
