By joining to 12v batteries together to make 24v can they be charged by the 12v alternater.

only problem is that each battery will receive half the current in amps from the charger, if both batteries have equal internal resistance.

No,
they need 24 volts min across the 2 outside terminals

24v pos (+) ___+ batt 1 -- _____+ batt 2 -- ____. 24V neg (--)

yeah, they only get half the voltage so you need a 24V alt. coz half of 24 is 12

same current flow will occur because only 1 path to flow through

I was thinking you could charge the batteries seperate with 12v alt.

not sure if that would work, 1 alternator wont work. coz it will short the first battery. just get a 24V alternator.

this will short the first battery:

running 2 alternators like this wont work either:
because, 12V produced by the first alternator will half and become 6V, and 6V will be passed on to the second battery. which is already being fed 12V making it an 18V battery.
