v6 vitara noise

hey i have a 2L 96 vitara and it has started to make a tapping type noise at low revs around 1-1.7 has anybody else had this and wat do i hav to do to get it fixed. it does not sound nice it used to happen every now and then but now it seems permenant. cheers for any advice i hav yet to hav time to seek my mechanics opinion
