Engine Oil

Post by Jam-Pony »

Is there already an oil advice thread or a wrap up on all the different type of oils etc?

I have looked and not found anything.

What i am trying to work out it which oil is best for a 4.6 rover set up for racing. I have been told to use a 0w - 40 fully synthetic Mobil oil but at $110 for 5L i want to make sure that his information is correct and that there isn't an alternative that still provides the performance I need.

Rangie, injected 4.6L, 35's, 8274, HID's, 6pt Cage, F & R Lockers...

What else turns you on? Drugs? Casual sex? Rough sex? Casual rough sex? I'm a docter, i need to know.

A bit more information would be beneficial. What do you mean set up for racing? What type of racing?
The engine builder would be the best person to ask as they'll know what clearances the engine has and what oil will suit best.

I would have thought a zero weight oil would be too thin for a 4.6L, but if it built tight it may need it.

I certainly wouldn't be using mobil one fully synthetic. Especially if you're racing. I'd suggest using a cheaper oil and replacing it often. Your engine oil does a huge job and when you hammer your engine the oil takes all the punishment.
Mobil one synthetic is good for longterm but the shear expense makes puts it out of the question unless you've got dollars to burn.

Castrol edge oils are every bit as good but not fully synthetic. Your 4.6 will defintely not require a fully synthetic oil. And i'd suggest a 10 weight oil, 10w40 or 5w30 at the lowest.

Good luck, Dan
