i will be looking to buy one of these soonish a gu ute 4.2td or a d22 dual cab navara 3.0td so i am looking around
this car will have to last me 7 years atleast, and it needs to be able to tow the comp rig around
my concern is how does the likes of a gu ute tow like? also the navara says it can tow 2.8t but how does it go with this much weight on it
it has to be a ute due to work price prob about 35k

Id start going test drivin both first, see how you fit in it... then see what you think the power is like of both just without trailer..
I think the Navara may struggle with large weight on it....
I always thought you couldnt tow more than your car weighed...?

not sure i think 4wd's are allowed 1.5 times their weight i could be wrong though i will go and sit in some as im a tall bloke

Not sure what the Navara's like as far as towing goes but I'd think the GU would have to tow better than it with the td42 & I'm sure they have a larger towing capacity also:?
I had to tow boofs lux home on the trailer a month or so back & it towed really well. It felt reasonabley stable on the road cruising @ 100k & the td42 wasn't working over time to tow it as I'd guess the 3.0 would...
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I'm pretty sure the GU's good for 3.5t towing capacity?!?!

id get the GU, the little navara might struggle with towing large loads over time

If you want it to last you 7 years of towing, I'd DEFINATELY go the td42 mate....

i tow my MK around with a td42 in a GU ute. it tows fine, towed it out to cruiser a few times and up the glasshouse countless times, it's never been a problem however with no turbo you definetley feel the weight. i would think the navara would struggle towing anything of substantial size.
i'm also 6'3 and i fit in the GU without being cramped or uncomfortable

we run a couple of navara utes. we tow a good 2.5+ ton (gross) as well as 1 ton on the deck. handles it no problems. even with dodgy (read none) brakes on the trailer the ute dosn't get pushed around.
the patrol is a bigger vechile, heavier, costs more to run. the navara is smaller, lighter, cheaper to run. also a navara will be cheaper to buy.
however if your towing big loads everyday the patrol would be more suited.

The latest 2.5L Navara goes hard, tows, steers and brakes well. I havent heard any reports of bad things happening to them, but their too new to comment on their longevity.
I towed Firetruck from Melbourne to Canberra for Sean (ABT 4x4) using his Navara 2.5, it was pretty impressive.
I think the standard GU is much more lazy and lacks power and torque in comparison, but this can be fixed with a bit of $$$.
I just can't stand the styling of the Navara inside or out...it looks to "honda" for me..... and the seats suck.
I'd go the Patrol ute (I have one) cause they are just soo relyable and proven.

I've got the 2.5 D40 and tows my GQ comp ute & the buggy we have with ease. Struggles a little on hills ( from the 6th gear back to 3rd or 4th on the Warwick range). Temp guage never moves. I am really happy with it. i'm guessing the ute is 2.5T or just under with all the bar work & fully loaded for a comp.
All i will be doing is an Aussie Super Spring in the rear ( instead or Bellows ) to level back out when the load is on there.
at least with the Navara it has the capacity of 3T braked compared to the 2.6T with the Patrol ute (unladen of course).

Acutally if you want to see what the navara goes like .. talk to Benny & he can organise me to come around with the ute in tow so you can see for yourself.

Wouldn't seating also come into the equation? do you want 5 seats of 2/3?

seating doesn't bother me too much 5 or 2 doesn't matter and towing i don't think it will be maybe once a month is that alot
anyway there alot of good feedback on the d40 but im not too keen on the way it looks its the d22 that i like the look of i spose what im really after is how long will the navara last klm wise? i know the patrol will last near 500 000 klm's if looked after not that i will be holding on to it for that long
but i do need something that will last
one advantage of getting a navara would be lower klm's compared to a gu at the same price

clutches will be a issue with the new navara. ours lasted 65,000 and nissan wyong said that was normal. they have like zero torque down low off boost so u have to give them a hard time when manouvering etc. my cousin has the new d40 and i sometimes tow my 4.6m alloy quintrex around with it. once up and running its ok, but it absolutely hates the slow speed stuff. and thats with less than a tonne being towed. id definately go the 4.2.

yeah there seams to be a fair few stories of clutchs burnng out or not living very long in the D40. maybe an auto would be better?
also from what i've been told the D22's have stopped production, so if you want one get it quick. the factory has been changed over to D40 production. a right pain as they do not make single cab D40's.

I've got a D22 and I am very happy with it. Tow a 20ft v8 wake/ski boat over the range without an issue and the economy while towing is very impressive. Never over 10Lt/100k's around town, and up to about 14 with a decent weight behind.
I am also familiar with the new 2.5td which is in the the D40's. My old man recently got one in a new pathfinder, it is a very smooth, and he says it tow's well, he traded a GUIV ST-L for it. We also own a TD42 GQ, and my bro has a TB42 GQ, and recently traded a TB45.
I have had a fair bit of drive time personally behind all of these vehicles, I am still very happy with my ZD30 both towing and for daily use, perhaps only lacking to the 2.5td for an everyday and economical commuter.
My Navara hit 3 years old two weeks ago and I was very happy when Nissan phoned me and asked if I would like another 3years warranty on it for $1050, so I took them up on it. To date my Navara has been serviced and nothing more, nothing gone wrong or needed replacing.

Just did the same thing myself and ended up with a 2005 GU St Ute, its had turbo work done, 3" system and boost controller.. goes like stink..
Heaps of grunt and spools up around 1300 rpm..
New Navara's are nice though..

I was supprised to learn the patrol utes were only rated to tow 2.5t when some of the wagons were rated for a tonne more. Definately needs a 3inch exhaust upgrade for towing heavy loads though, completely changed the car. Ive been running around in a 02 st coilcab.
The navaras have got some go to them, but the patrol pulls slow and steady all through the rev range and i'm not waiting for the turbo to spool.

how much towing are people doing to burn out clutches quickly is there a heavy duty one available?
Posted: Thu Aug 23, 2007 8:47 am
by tweak'e
also what about licences?
with us, a fully loaded navara and trailer puts us into the truck weight category, so the driver requires truck licence.
depending on your local rules, a heavier tow vechile might limit how much load you can have on traier etc if your only on a car licence.
as far as wearing out clutches goes.......i suspect those launching starts wears out the clutch far more than towing does.

from lquickly looking around i have found Gu utes with 100 000 - 140 000 klm's on clock and for navara's 50 000 - 100 000klm's on the clock in my price range so if both were well looked after is it true that diesels aren't even worn in properly at 100 000 or is this a myth

by GeneralFubashi
they should be well and truly seated by 10,000 and worn in by 30. They only say 100 cause most of these engines should last past 500. There is something to be said for bigger is better for extended load applications though. The patrol feels like a big car and absorbs a lot of shock without passing it on to the passengers, but the navara is definately more sprightly and easy to get around the town in (and park).

go the GU if your intrested in towing. have towed with a nav before, 3L and its not much chop, that was towing a bike trailer with 3 bikes as well.

One of my good mates tows a 23' fibreglass boat, it's a Hobson very heavy, I think trailer and boat its close to 3t. He has a 02 D22 ute on 32's and picked up an intercooler from Europe, when he does work stints there. Pretty sure its just the same as the Patrol intercooler, but Euro D22's are extra-cab and intercooled. Anyway he tows it in Tassie through the mountains to the west coast for cray'ing, does fine, better than the old non-turbo td42 Mav, we used to go in.

The D40's have had diff problems and clutch problems.
I test drove an auto and it was crap to drive. You needed to thrash it to make it go and it spent all the time outside the rev range ie either below or above the power range. I was very dissapointed with the shift pattern.
And the manuals eat clutchs so.......

D40 clutches are crap. especialy as they tend to lack that nice big torque at idle that a 4.2 has.
however aftermarket clutchs are advailable includeing single plate conversions.
