ND/E Pajero Turbo Diesel Head Problem Query

Hi all,

This is my first post here...

I am looking at purchasing a 4wd and I had a look at an 86 turbo diesel (4d55t) today. Now, besides the fact that oil was leaking from the turbo (rebuild, I think...), there was also a rather large amount of oil leaking all the way along the head/block join. A mechanic friend of mine is certain it is the gasket, however, with the alloy heads once you take them off, you need to send them away to get them looked at.

My query is how much is a best case/worst case scenario likely to cost? Are there any specialists on these engines in WA that anyone knows?

I ordinarily would leave any vehicle with these kind of problems, but the rest of the vehicle is very, very tidy for it's age and it is also not a bad price.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

David.

Mate in reguards to costing, its a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. Best case is a head gasket and plane the head. worst case is a complete rebuild. Get a quote from a good mechanic and weigh up your options.

Kevin,

Thanks for the reply. I should have been more specific; I was hoping to get a general consensus on what working on that head normally costs people. Maybe if I could ask approximately what members of the board think that a head gasket/ machining of the head should be, so I can get some sort of figure to play with?

Again, thanks Kevin.

Gasket set for 4D56T for me was $160NZ. Valve grind and head clean up was $45. Head didn't need planing, but ring any engine recon place and they'll give you an idea.

Biggest thing is the time to do it all, and the other parts such as cam belts that you may as well repalce if you are going that far.

Thanks for the reply. That gives me something to go on... now to work out whether it is worth doing all that work.

Thanks again.

Forgot to mention, There are two belts to replace as well- the cam + the balancing shaft belt. If it breask then disaster. The water pump may need doing as well... I would price it all up before pulling it apart or buying, if you are not going to do the work yourself then it'll be more than the vehicles worth.
