fj40 build up

hey guys had 2 fj40 sitting down beside the shed for a few years now and it has come time too start building one the one ill be using is currently set up for a 3.9 rover engine and 4 speed box so will stick with that. The shell is completly rust free apart from some surface rust will be doing all the work myself as im a diesel mechanic would love some ideas i want it too be a capable 4wd with plenty of flex it will be my first toyota build and on a budget but i have a welder and pipe bender and a nice big shed Image[/img][/url]Image

where did you find a rust free tub??

mate on a tight budget, how about 60 series diffs, coiled?
lockright locker in the back and a welded or open front?

what would be the pros of 60series diffs are they wider and would a coil setup be a big job and with the rust free body my brother got it a couple of yrs ago in top condition and i brought it of him

Well you could go 80 series diffs and coils front and rear but might be hard without blowing your budget. Otherwise 60 diffs front and rear, soa with long flat leaves, hi steer, trac-bar.

What state are you in and is this going to be a road going rig?

Also where did you get the gravity defying garage?

80 diffs might be a bit out of my budget :cry: hehe i rotated that pic and thats how it showed up on here i live in nsw and yes it will be driven on the road i found a couple of good four link setups for the rear and ill just go soa in the front keep the ideas coming please and how do i go about the steering Image

mate its all budget relative. and what you want to use it for.

60 diffs have better brakes then 40s. and are wider.
80 series diffs are wider again with disc brakes all around.


yeah im going coil myself at the moment.
i think the ride will be a big step up.

flat spring over will give you great flex.

steering im looking at 80 series steering myself.
power steering is a must.
you could look at hydraulic assist but just depends on your $$$.

Mate give us an ieda of your budget, if we know the dollars you are looking to spend we can give you many suggestions.

You will get good flex going soa or even just a good 4 inch lift. There are many many ways to make a 40 a capable offfroad vehicle.

as DRS said a basic flat spring SOA will give you a decent flex with standard diffs. Depends how hard you drive too :)

Sorry just re-read your last post.

A budget but not as good power steering option is to get a 2wd hilux power steering box, they look the same as the normal armstrong steering box on a 40.

Next best is to find the shopping list and convert to 60s power steering with different steering coloum parts. though those parts are getting hard to find.

Basically depending on what you do with your diffs depends on what you do with your steering.

at the moment i dont know how much i wanna spend all work i will do myself im gunna go 60 diffs with 4 link coil rear and soa front im not in a big rush so it wil probably be around a 6month build or so

hey i also wanted too let you guys know that pick of the 4 link i put up is only $800 US but you have too weld it all in yourself witch isnt a prob for me just wanted too know if any1 knows of ppl in australia makin 4 link setup for the fj40 im even think about attempting it myself

toysuzi off here is about to do mine.

also daz on 3rdrock4x4.com has done a couple of coil conversions on 40s now.


i dont know if you have looked yet but www.ih8mud.com is an awesome resource.

i just brought a 10 gallon sandblaster of ebay too clean the chassic up so will pick it up this week and get the chassic clean this weekend hpefully

ok now i know what im doing with the engine next is engine and auto package im thinkin either 308 and th700 or could i get a 60series turbo diesel with 5speed in it with out too many problems

What sort of wheeling you going to do?

Whsat sort of driving you going to do?

Whast sort of tyres you want to run?

All these things will affect the choices you make on engine.

A tourer with sub 35 tryes you would want the diesel.

A toy with big rubber go the v8

i hope its going too be a good build up it may be a slow build up but it will happen and im thinking a toy with around 36"tyres but i also want fuel economy so i can go 4wdrivin for a weekend and not have too worry about fuel like i would have too with a v8 petrol so im thinkin diesel with an aftermarket turbo kit for a bit more grunt but it would e a non turbo for a while

If you want 36 inch tyres, the centipedes measure at that diameter.

Sounds like you would be better off going with a 60s driveline.

Get a damaged 60s transplant teh driveline accross. That way you get your diesel, 5 speed (hard to get in a 40s) and wider diffs. also everything will already be matched up well.

If you wanna keep the cruiser soul with a turbo diesel power, you have several options ..

Like 12H-T ( IMOP your best bet ) or 13B-T or the most amaziong engine made by Toyota .. 1HD-T ( that sure mae the swap little more complicated .. )
