Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey Guys,

I'm planning on slapping a rear winch on my Discovery in preparations to our 1st challenge this year at the Rain Forest Challenge in Malaysia and was wondering which one would be best suited for the rear of the truck?

RE is a worm gear drive, meaning that the braking is inate and safe, however, it is slow...very slow...

I have an M8274-50 up front, so the idea of having the same winch out back is tempting, (spares...etc), and the external braking system is great, but will it be better than the RE?

I am willing and able to fit either of these winches, and either one will be fitted with Rockstomper's rope+fairlead...

Your thoughts...

Don't think we see RE's out here! May be wrong - probably.

the re 10 is probably easier to fit but the warn would be my pick...

1 set of spares,
ability to swap them over if need be,
warn has known modifications to make it reliable.

DiscoDino needs a worm reduction or hydraulic winch on rear for reliable feeding out/lowering down steep banks.

Spur and planetary reduction winches (like Warn) have a problem with the brake overheating (brake is allways applied) when feeding out under load. The internal brake on Warn low mounts are only good for a few metres feeding out.

It looks like the current Ramsey models are planetary reduction though.

Have a look at the Cut Snake hydraulic winch - expensive and not near you, but appears to be a good application http://www.varsitor.com

The delima is between the RE and the Hi-Mount

The RE is slow, reliable, and integrated brake means safety.
The Hi-mount is fast, reliable, but the brake design is not the same.

How many people have needed to trail fix a new/well-maintained winch? A Hi-mount at that? I'll be carrying teh exact same rope as a spare that can fit on either FWIW...
