18re ?

Post by Liam »

I have 18re toyota petrol in a vehicle (dont ask)...it's carby is on the way out. Dont want to throw money at it.
Is there another Toyota motor with the same mounts and bellhousing or alternativelyan injection system off some other toyota that'll fit the 18re?
I'd rather swap a whole engine in.
I'm trying not to change the gearbox (unless it's for an auto) because the existing 4 speed has a column change with a linkage setup- way too much work to remake.

The R series motors have the same bell housing.

the 18rg is a twin cam 2l and you can get efi for it a a good price. It is also easiy to set up with the computer.
As this engine was in the early hilux's, celica, corrolla, cressida's hi ace's and just about any other late 70's early 80's small toyota, getting hold of a auto would be very easy.
It would also be a very easy job to cut a hole in teh floor and install a 5 speed as well.
years ago I bought a rebuilt 18rg, efi with 5 speed, new clutch, computer and wiring for $1500. So you should be able to get a even better price for them now. It may be cheaper to just buy a whole car with a sh!t body, but decent drivechain.

Or you could just ditch the 18r engine and drop in a 3TGTE engine. 1.8L, twin cam, twin ignition, fuel injected turbo and a 6 speed. Made my old celica get up and go thats for sure.

I am not so sure on that, the heads are very different, not sure that the manifolds will bolt up, but as for whole engine sawps you can fit any R series, they have the same mounts and bellhousing. there are lots of different sumps though so keep the one off your existing motor, also flywheels are not 100% interchangable, there are a couple of different flywheel bolt sizes, but the clutches are all more or less the same. 21R keeps it 2 litre and is a better motor if you can find one, otherwise there's a million coronas and celicas with 18R's and 22R's, shouldn't have trouble finding one of them.
