I had the gearbox out and replaced the seals and gaskets on it due to leaking, and since thats gone back in i now have a slight leak from the rear of the engine as well as the front of the gearbox.CANT WIN.But not enough to justify the drop on the dipstick.I replaced the front gearbox seal and bearing coverplate gasket but still getting gearbox leak.
It may be time for the V8 i think. Its not that hi a km's but due to sitting for almost 3 years everythings gone brittle, its smokey on start up and blows when loaded up but other than that its not to bad.
Will persist with it for now, cheers

Junior, mine blows white on start up for a few seconds then dies off, and blows black under load just like your describing,
But mine uses almost no oil at all. only what is coming out of the crank case breather thing ( like one drop a week ) and that is normal.
You might be up for a new one me thinks.

Looks that way screwy. In regards to ya crank case breather, mine had a inch hole in the side of it with no pipe when i got the rig,i saw one on a patrol at the wreckers with no whole and a long steel pipe heading up to the rocker cover(i asume this is the correct one yes) For memory this rig was at one stage a turbo diesel due to the rocker covers rear breather cap.But i ran mine to the air cleaner due to the standard sd33 rocker cover on mine.
I have a nice little worked 253 sittin around so i mite put that in,rod shop sell the bellhousing for $350 and machine the holden flywheel to suit nissan clutch for $75.
What do you think id get for the sd33 24v as a runner (complete) any ideas?
Thanx

back in the day when i posted this stuff i had no idea....

basically white smoke is never fanstastic but all SD33s do it when they are cold, or most of them anyway after this sorta of age.....

black is only running rich, if your truck is only blowing white on start then nothing at all warm then its not doing too bad...

my old SD33 motor had like 380 on the clock or somethign and was still in fanstastic nick, ask kingy he owns it now...

look .if its got good pwr, does not blow BLUE smoke(or white when on load)
and its not chugging like a steam engine though oil filler when running(some allowed!!take filler cap off and check.))then its proberly ok!!you must be leaking it if it aint doing the above...(blocked breather, forcing it out past seals??)

so dont junk it yet!!get someone to follow you and them to check exhaust gas colour on load...(and how much.)

oh check your water to see if its not going in there(via oil cooler/headgasket)

if all seems ok,then if you can live with it just keep it topped up..

oh they DONT all smoke white on cold start up.mine dont!(well prehaps one puff, abit like some smoker letting out lung full of Grimace smoke)but no more than that..even at 0c..

Diesel burns WHITE when its burnt below normal opperating temperature..... IE in a cold motor, thats why we have glowplugs, the glow plug "heats" the cylinder up enough to get the diesel to fire, then once its fired the heat from the combustion adds more heat to the cylinder thus increasing the opperating temp on each firing.

BLUE smoke is the color of burnt oil, some engines with a few K's on em will blow a small amount of blue smoke under load but none during normal driving, thats a sign that the motors life is getting near the end.

Black smoke is a rich mixture and should only be seen under HARD acceleration.
If black smoke is visiable under normal driving then get it to a mechanic ASAP, a rich mix will cause overheating in a diesel.

My daily driver is a 81 MQ diesel and regularily returns 30MPG, blows white smoke for 20 - 30 secounds after startup ( cold ) and the normal glow period is around 15 secounds. Uses around 1/2 a lit every 3 months. It has just clocked up 470,000K's and should do another 100,000 with luck.

One thing that may be an issue is the OIL LEVEL in the motor....
> DONT OVER FILL THE ENGINE <
SD33's dont like it when there's even 500ml of excess oil in the sump and they will spit it out real quick however they can be it via the zorst or crankcase breather.
The other thing that may be causing the smoke is tired old glowplugs, if it takes any longer than 20secounds to reach full glow than wack in a new set of glowplugs. Check the voltage at the plug too, often mud/grit/etc ends up in the electrical connector and reduces voltage to the glowplugs thus increasing time it takes to reach full glow and or a more smokey cold start due to the loss of full glow.

Just pulled out the old diesel, 527404 klms tight as a drum inside.
piston bore clearance real good with no blowby, bottom end real good, oil pressure spot on, never had the head off before.
WHY pull it out? the greed for performance won

Correct

Macca has your old donk in Old yella ( 1980 model )

The other MQ thats the same as Macas avatar has the original motor from Old yella in it.

Its still doing 30MPG and still uses about half a lit every 3 months or so

She gets retired in 2 weeks time then up 4 sale or 4 scrap
