Hi, im putting the Gen 3 into my gq hopefully xmas time money permitting. Just want to get sorted how the exhaust will sneak down the drivers side. It will be a tight fit, what have you seen or done, some pics of other jobs even if its a 5 litre will help me get more of a mental picture. Thanks all, Nik.

Mine crosses over under the sump to the passenger side and joins up into one 3" all the way back but mines a 350.

Do you want a twin sytem all the way .

Under the sump sounds ok, i will have to see what clearance i have to the diff when its fitted up. And no i dont want a twin i always liked the sound of a single 3in they sound the best.

I have a 2" lift and it just touches on the breather fitting when its at full travel down on the bump stop, im in the process of spacing the diff forward so that should fix it and moving breather fitting.

But really it never touches it unless you go real hardcore, during normal driving there is about 6/7" clearance wiht block hugger headers. You might be ok depends on where the sump bump is and where the xhaust comes out of the manifold or extractor.

I've just done a Gen 4 L76 into a GU and had to go forward on the RHS and under the sump and then back and mating to the LHS. This car was stock height, had to build an extractor for the RHS and used a Genie stubby on the LHS. I pulled the springs out and built it on the bump stops, its very tight at the top of the diff pumpkin, had to move the brake line joiner and lower the diff breather.

Yeah ive moved the brake line joiner and in the process of moving the breather fitting but other than that it was real easy with the block hugger headers.

What block huggers? I got some Genie ones but wasn't happy as the diff was practically sitting on the extractor, I remade then and moved the collector towards the block, it would depend on the suspension height and the engine location as to fitment. I wasnt happy to go any higher on the motor due to the tailshaft angle at stock height.

Yeah used genie's but i remember now we cut the collector off and started the pipe a lot higher up to allow for more clearance. We never used a collector on the drivers side.

It tucks in a nd follows the block from just below the head face area without compromising the piping sizes.

But like joel said it all depends on vehicle height, engine fit etc etc.

Thats what I had to do, hate bolt ons that dont bolt on! Makes quoting a job very hard

Did you buy the ones from Marks???

I just got mine from genie direct,i didn't expect them to fit straight in .

did you buy the pair of genies or just the LHS? from what you have both said and what i can see looking at the car going forward on the RHS will be the best way. other ways i will look at will be going out thru the guard like an diesel 80 series does. this may mean remoddeling some panels and body mounts though. when the engine is in i will have to make that call. do you guys mind sharing some happy snaps of these said jobs youve done?

I just put a 5 litre in my GQ shorty. Im running a T400 auto which creates a small space btw the transfer case and the auto box. My exhaust bends in under here from the driver side to meet up with the passenger side pipe

I thought of doing the auto box but i like the cog swapper. Maybe it would have made some things easier but will be tops when its done. Cant wait to chuck the boat anchor and get a light weight engine with smooth and reliable horsepower. :D

I would probably make the RHS extractor from scratch next time, the LHS is OK but if you want A/C in the standard position for a Holden you need to move the engine towards the passenger side more than the extractor will allow. In other words make both sides.

Joel i found out that Castle Auuto Electric & Exhaust Service make block hugging headers that are suitable for this conversion.

Thanks joel. I dont think i will fit the a/c up, so the engine will fit central. Thanks for all the input. Nik.

Maybe next time, the problem with bolt ons are thet rely on the engine being in a std position, if you move the engine back as is often good then they dont fit anymore. I'd be keen to see them, the Genie ones are not impressive, the primaries are too short and the fit is impossible without modification on a std height vehicle, I'd confidently say they wouldn't make maximum power.
Might pay to ask if they are selling the Genies as they were sold to me as a bolt on Gen3/4 into Patrol and they really aren't.

Ive not seen the Gen 3/4 genie headers are they no good. How do they compare to the chevy ones.

Why dont you put the aircon pump up the top like i did on mine, its on the passenger side above the power steering pump, engine sits dead cemtre.

Thanks for the pics madrolla68. They are food for thought. I might look at the castle hill set of block huggers. I have a short time frame for the job. Im doing a dual cab chop at the same time. And want to get as much pre assembled as possible,

easies way to do it is to run a windsor because left and right manifolds are interchangable, then run 2 lefts and the right side foward under the front of the car... simple :D

Thanks cooki monsta, i'll keep that in mind for next time, but for now i will stick with what i've got already, the gen 3.

Customers car is a tow vehicle that does lots of interstate klms, was attempting to keep things as standard as possible for future ease of maintenance in regards to the A/C and all the accesories.
The engine, if offset to the passenger side a bit more just makes room around the sump and diff pumpkin and for the tight RHS exhaust, many manufactures offset the engines for clearance around steering, brake booster and alike, as little as 1/2 inch can help.

Yeah thats fair enough,if it works then good.

Hey we dynoeda couple of those new 70 series V8's today the single turbo ones,

The wagon made 135Kw and 415Nm and the ute made 132Kw and 409Nm.

Thats lasy, my vortec makes 215Kw and 460Nm on gas N/A.

Keeping as much standard as possible is a good idea. There's no getting around the mods to exhaust though hey. Where is Castle Auto Services, have you got a contact number for them?

I havent got the number, PM KillBill, they are in Casltemaine Victoria, I think they are somehow connected to Hadfield engineering.

Those figures are OK for stock, better starting point than th 65 or so a TD42 Turbo makes.
