the 2.4 is the 2l motor i was told they seem to have problems around 200,000kms mine stuffed up around 230 mechanic told me a valve had bent. but im thinking bout doing a 2.8(3l) conversion.
the 2l was an ok engine but if u want some more top end u will need a turbo as it was flat out doing 120 on the highway

I'm not a 2L engine lover .. but a 2L-T can handle 14 PSI of boost and push it very well .. it's a delicated engine that require care .. but if it run well can do nice ..

I believe the surfs ran the 2.4 standard, the 2.8 was only available in the Oz spec runners??

firstly all runners are surfs !
the 2.8 ver was the bottom spec model ie budget model.
most comman is the 2LT 2.4 turbo.
i think the first series surfs came out with the 1L, 1LT, 2L and 2LT (2.2 an 2.4 atmo and turbo). however a 91 never came out with a 2L. they could have just shoved a 2L in it to get it going and flick it off.
with the surfs gearing the 2L would be painfully slow.

No they are not there are a lot of differences in body panels, specs, motors gearboxes etc. Have a read of the forum you posted a link to and you will find that the 4 runner never came with a turbo motor and different boxes to the surf. They are similiar models but not the same. Its the same as the Tacoma and Hilux.

afaik the body panels are all interchange with the surf.
motors, are the same as the surf, surf comes out with 2.8 deisel and 3litre V6. the only real difference is spec, ie power windows, heating aircon etc. its just a varirion of what surfs come out with. there is quite a range of spec advailable with surfs.
the only odd thing is the gearbox. 4 runner seems to have the basic hilux gearbox box rather then the surf ADD. i'm not 100% sure that the budget model of the surf comes with ADD or stick.

Sorry mate but you are still wrong. There are many differences including running gear and the engines were never the same and they are both “Hilux’sâ€

You are way off the mark.
Strictly speaking *N130's, 4Runner had either a 22R (2.4L 4cyl Pet), 3VZ (3.0L V6 Pet) or 3L (2.8L 4cyl Dies) available in Australia, very early ones also had a 4Y (2.2L 4cyl Pet)
The Surfs that have been imported to Australia in *N130's have only had either a 2.4L Turbo Diesel (2L-T(E)) and 3.0L Turbo Diesel (1KZ)
So 4Runner is an N130 sold by Toyota Australia in Australia, Surf is an N130 sold by Toyota Japan in Japan, and then sold second hand to an importer which bought them into Australia under low level import laws.
Spec wise, there are only a few things that seperate them. Surf can be had in an Automatic Diesel, things like factory spare wheel carrier some minor cosmetic things like chrome bumpers. Some can be found with Recaro interiors. Your typical Surf interior is identical to that of an SR5 4Runner and of no higher spec. 4Runners came with electric windows, power steering, A/C and other things including ADD in various models, mostly in SR5 trim though.
Also during the early 90's an SR5 4Runner could be bought with a 2.8L Diesel (3L) as i have one, but this was eventually dropped from the model line up and the 2.8L only available in lower spec models.

exactly.....they are all N130's.

Which parts did i confirm? 2.8L Diesels are base models? 4Runners don't have ADD? Surfs have 2.8L Diesels and V6's? Motors are the same? In other markets (maybe even NZ i don't know) these kinds of things may be the case, but in Australia, they definantly aren't.
tweak'e wrote:exactly.....they are all N130's.
But by name they are not. The name gives indication to a lot of things that seperate them in the final build specifications.

It's quite simple guys SURFS have surf written on the badge. They only ever came in 2.4 and 3.0 litre Turbo diesels.
A 4runner. comes in 2.8D (same as a hilux ute) and 3.0 litre V6 petrol. It also has a badge on the back that says 4RUNNER.
Surfs are all second hand jap imports, 4 runners are all australian sold. Specs are different surf have all the fancy gadgets. only the "limited" models of 4runners had the fancy stuff surfs have. That's about all there is to it. I have owned all three surfs, hilux and 4runner. Tweak you were wrong.

there are a few OZ users on toyotasurf forum with 2.8 and 3 litre V6 surfs.
my point here is the badges don't mean d*ck.
just to really wind you 4runner fanboys up.... i did actually see a 2.4 turbo 4runner at the supermarket a while back. they also sometime even come with the landcruiser name (go fiqure!). tho more common is the hilux surf.
at the end of the day, no matter what name, they are all surfs

The guys on the surf forum have instaled the 3L (2.8) into their surfs to replace a blown 2.4.
NO 4Runner gen II EVER came out with a 2.4 turbo or not, and NEVER came out with a 3.0 diesel turbo or not. All though many a gen II owner wished they had the 3.0TD motor.
Corect about runners being aussie spec and surfs jap spec. Yes panels are interchangable between the same gen vehciles.

i should have mentioned it could be a jap 4runner (rebadged surf, japs love USA stuff) or from south africa etc (we get imports from all over the place)
