3.5 Fuel Injection

Im thinking about putting fuel injection on my 85 rangie to get rid of the dual carbies i hate so much... has anyone done this? (i know lots of ppl have but anyone here) Im only planning on getting my heads freshened up and ive been told i can just bolt the injection manifold on etc? I can get a whole injection setup like manifold, loom, computer, injectors etc for $500... is there anything i should look out for? any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

I have the same Rangie, 85' carb with t/flite and i have a complete 86'efi setup that is going on when i get time, i'm sick of thr bloody carbs running rich and cant wait to get the efi fitted. You will need to source an efi fuel pump either by fitting an efi tank with internal pump or i'll be using a vl dunnydoor external bosch pump that i got at the wreckers for $40.
I only paid $250 for my gear and that was for the lot- manifold, fuel rail, injectors, afm, ecu , loom , airfilter , valve covers and all the relays and other bits to make it fit. main thing to look out for would be stuffed injectors , afm or ecu, but if you can get it cheap enough you can use alternative parts to make it work.

what i have been told is that the efi heads have a notch machined into the top of the inlet port to allow for the flow of the injector but otherwise are the same as carb ones.

All of the Rover V8's are the same, later model 3.5's are high compression from 82 onwards.

We put a rebuilt V8 from one of my old wrecks I had (79 2 door) and everything bolted up without a hitch. The only thing was to put the adaptor fitting to the rear of the rebuilt motor as it's an auto and the 2 door that I wrecked was manual.

I suggest also that the later 3.9 and early 3.5 Disco EFI system is a much better prospect (Lucas hot wire) as it offers better performance.

This is Correct as i just fitted a 3.9 to my hilux and swapped to Carbs and the inlets do have notches in them for the injectors.

so do i have to buy later model fuelie heads to have the notch provision? cause i can get a whole motor out of a 96 model disco for $1300 so would i be better off just doing that?

If you can get a complete good condition 3.9 out of a disco then dont bother fitting efi to the existing lump ! As i said earlier you just need to put a notch in the top of the inlet port for the injector. $1300 sounds way too cheap, so unless its a friend i would be very careful .

3.9s usually sell for around $3500 complete exchange so without an exchange i would expect to pay around $4500.

Having said that i just bought my 3.9 bare long with 3 months warrenty for $800 but this had no manifold and a damaged timming case.

Dont waste your time with complexities of fitting efi. Grab an edelbrock manifold, a good Carter AFB carb or a Quadrajet with adaptor (which I use) and you will love it. Better power, better economy, no fuel problems on hills or side angles. An afternoons work once you assemble the parts.
You will need to the get the carby set up for your motor but its worth it.
