De turboing a motor while turbo is rebuilt ?

Well my CT20 is screwed Smoke screen is a bit thick, 700mls of oil for 40Kms is a bit to much even from me.. but I still need to drive to work (no other way of getting there)
So is it feasible to de-turbo a a 2l-T back to just a 2L while the turbo is getting reco'd ?

Ditch the turbo and fab a pipe from the exhaust manifold to the existing exhaust, cap the oil line and plug the return and make up a pipe to go from the air cleaner to the intake .. and perhaps turn up the fuel a bit so it will at least do 100 .. (pump has a boost compensator on it)

How long is it going to take to get reconditioned? Shouldnt really take more than 1 to 2 days turnaround. Sounds like a time consuming and expensive task making up temprorary exhaust and intake pipes and blocking your oil lines (this could cause problems too, if anything join the 2 pipes so that it flows as normal).

Apart of pipes and oil ( water ) lines .. you should be aware about your EGT coz the 2L-T IP had the turbo setting .. means plenty more fuel than stock 2L neeed ..

Also .. I thought the 2L have more compresion ratio than 2L-T .. to compensate the lacks of turbo ..

So you will run it pretty slow ..

Probably better off to hire a car for a few days and sort the turbo issue out properly.

Every where I have called has said " hmm CT20 hard to get parts for" "sorry we dont work on those to hard to get bits for" etc etc etc.

At about $60 a day for a rental, plus another $900 for a rebuild that may take a week (once I can find somewhere to do it) plus time to ship it there and back .. it becomes a VERY expensive exercise.

Will wind up cheaper to repower it than fix the turbo ..

So basically you need a standard exhaust manifold or extractors, maybe even the first section of the exhaust pipe. The oil and water parts are easy, I'd just be concerned that the pump may be sending in too incorrect fuel.

Thats about the size of it.
At idle it does not make any smoke, and when I first got it the pressure lines to the boost compensator were hooked up wrong so it was not adding any more fuel at boost .. apart from being incredibly SLOW it was fine.

At the moment the seals are so bad that you can actually see oil dripping out of the turbo houseing at idle. and fortunately there is an exhaust joint not 400 meters from my house. so i just need to jerry rig something to get it that far and he can make up an "adapter" of sorts for me.

it will work, short term

are you sure your oil line is not blocked or has flow restricted?

check the return side!

I had it apart the other day (tuesday) and I put a small bottle brush kind of thing down it so it should not be restricted .. But I will take another look on saturday when I get a chance to pull it apart. (I will take it all the way off the block this time)

would this help your situation instead of the hassle of a rebuild?

[quote="love_mud"] $900 for a rebuild [quote]

 I remember getting a CT26 rebuilt AND highflowed for about $700. This was probably about 9 years ago though, have prices really gone up that much?

I once took the turbo centre out and put a piece of round flt plate in the hole, bogged it up, screwed the screws in that hold the turbo, and ran like that for a week...but i would recommend you use shanks's pony while its getting rebuilt or buy a second hand one and 4 litres of oil...

buy a 2nd hand 1 to keep u goin, save a bit more cash to replace what u spent on the 2nd hander, n then send urs off to get rebuilt....n then u will always have a spare laying around n never have to worry about being without ur car for turbo related reasons ;)

I have a IHI rhb5 turbo (Same turbo as is found on the Isuzu 3.0 in the jackeroo and Monteray) which is supposedly alot more efficient than the CT20.
I need some time to make\get made some adapters to be able to run this turbo on the 2L.
I have had very little sucess with second hand CT20's, the one I am having issues with now was rebuilt about 20-25,000 Kms ago (purchased of Ebay with recipts for rebuild from a respected shop in NZ). So I dont want to head down that path again.

I think I will fix it up and sell it. along with the two dead CT20's I have sitting in the garage now ..

Really I am sick of working on it instead of driving it.

After 10 years owning a old TLC ( it's 1987 and I bought second hand in 97 ) I learn a simple lesson ..

It's not a speed race .. it's a endurance race .. I know your feeling, to take a rest .. take it easy and go again .. it's perior .. ( long one maybe ) get your vehicle in complete shape .. but when you are done .. you will enjoy it.

trust me ..

Now .. no fair, get your adapter and run your IHI rhb5 ..

well it runs fine sans turbo, I used the old exhaust housing from one of the other stuffed turbos (it is cracked realy badly between the waste gate and the exhaust turbine exit) I made up a plate for the hole where the centre housing would normally be and welded it up.
The Oil feed I made a plate and notched it between the oil feed and drain with a gasket between made from an old but of gasket paper and some silicone, and for air I have rigged it up with a fully sick K&N pod I had laying about, about and hour and a bit worth of work.
It is one of the dodgyier mods I have done, but it only has to last a few weeks until I get an adapter made up to turbo it again.

Will still do 110 just ... a hill really kills it (hills I would normally do at 110 I am now doing 85) and the noise from the pod is driving me mental
