Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Holden (and Ford) use Saginaw Power Steer pumps, in anything V8, from at least VL - VT and the new LS1 has a similar pump, without the reservoir, like the VN - VY V6 pumps. They are all basicly the same, but I want to know if anyone knows the differences between them?
Basicly there is the V6 pump (with res or without) with Variable steering or without, and the 5.0 V8 pump (similar to the Ford 6 & V8 pumps) with the built on reservoir, or the LS1 / LS2 pump, like the V6, seperate reservoir, (different for variable P/S or without).

Which one pumps the most (I assume you want a pump that pumps more?)
I want to make it work my F150 Steering Box, turning 44" tyres.

A bigger pump will put less heat into the fluid, right?

With a few tricks you can boost the pressure. What about hydro assist ???

I don't know much about the Hydro Assist, but that takes stress off the steering linkages, box and chassis, right?

How does it work, you run a Ram off the diff housing to the draglink, but how does it know whether to pull in or push out, and by how much?

Drill and tap left and right flow circuits in the steering box and run hoses to left and right ports on the ram. Yes setup is as you said and it does take alot of stress of everything other than when a tyre is locked and you try strong arm turning.

So what other equipment is nessesary? A beefy Pump, to run both the Box and the Ram? The Ram itself and the hoses? Brackets to suit?
Is that all?
I would need to brace the Diff housing, to cope with the added stress, as it probably needs bracing as it is, let alone with more stress. Perhaps I could combine the Bracing and brackets with a cut & rotate of the knuckles, to save my front shaft a bit of stress.

I am not sure how this applies to other vehicles, but on the 404 mogs the Hydro assist consists of the Saginaw Power Steer pump, a control valve that generally runs off the steering column and a ram.

The ram is fitted in place of the steering damper.

One advantage is that if the pump fails, then you still have the original 'strongarm' steering setupo

On the other side of things if your running hydro assist and separate arms for the ram and track rod/drag link if the track rod/drag link broke would the ram be able to steer ?

If the drag link broke, the ram would not work in a hydro assist setup. the drag link provides resistance to open the valve so if its not there the steering doesn't work there is no hydraulic fluid flow.
