Hey everyone. I'm relitivly new here, have read the Suzuki and Toyota bibles, and just wondering if you could comment/make suggestions on my current setup. I have a Vitara 1600 carby donk, sierra 5spd, 6:1 rockhopper gears in transfer,Hilux diffs with 5.29's and 37's.
This is my DD and it's not too bad around town, but revs at around 4500 fro 100klms. Is there any way that I could get another transfer case(with stock gears) in there somewhere so I have a good high range(ie lower revs) ,as well as the rockhoppers for out the bush?
If this is a stupid question, please excuse my ignorance

sounds good. wheres the pics
maybe auto might be the way but unsure on gearing setup. u could go for higher transfer gears that have a lower reduction in high range but u are loosing out in L as well.
is your low too low at the moment offroad or about right. as i was thinking u could drop 4.88s into the diffs for a little bit of change.

use a vitara gearbox and transfer, ( no reduction on high range) give your rh to me and buy some gears for your vit transfer

Sounds like quite a car you have there.
Running dual transfer cases won't lower your cruise revs, only raise them.
you will have somewhere between 1.67 and 1.75 high range. adding another transfer will add another 1.409 to that.
If you run a vitara transfer and a stock sierra transfer, you end up with 1.409 high but only 4.1 low range.
You currently have 117:1 crawl, and by my maths I get 4117 or something at 100kph.
If you put 4.5 diff gears in it (85 hilux diesel) you'd get 100:1 crawl (still sweet) and 3500rpm at 100, which should be pretty sweet - you wouldn't want any lower.
Does that make sense?
Steve.

scrap your sierra transfer
use a vitara gearbox and transfer, ( no reduction on high range) give your rh to me and buy some gears for your vit transfer
better?

Not sure you have calculated this out Mr Green:
With a direct high range and 5.29 diffs, I get 2352 rpm @ 100, way too low, and only 79:1 crawl even with crawler gears in the vit case.
I still say go 4.5's in the diffs. Should be able to straight swap them for the 5.29's.
No need for any fab work either.

Nicbeer - Lowrange is pretty much spot on at the moment
Mr green - Thanks for the offer!
but I think I'll keep the RH!
Steve - yeah,it does make sense...I was just going to ask what if I put one of the transfers in N....but thought better of it!

Don't have many good pics of it
I have to admit, this was bought, not built.... (placed 8th in the 2006 tuff truck) ....but I've spent over double the original purchase price on it,and a sh!t load of work and time and effort to get it to where it is now.
But I'm sure you guys know all about that sort of thing!

What have you done to it? And get it on some rocks
thats where it belongs
I'd just go 4.5's or 4.88 in the diffs. Or better yet go bigger tyres
Nah, just change the diff gears, 37's are plenty big with zooks

well its looking good!!
I'm glad you have sorted it out a bit more. I'm jealous!!!
if it were still mine and I wanted to drive it on road a bit more, id put 4.8s in the diffs.
redzook of here had 1.3, 5sp, 6:1 xfer, 4.8 diffs, it went well off road. I don't think you will gain much speed at all in 1st low, so your crawling won't be affected much, but top end should be sweet.
I seem to remember redzook saying that with that setup his zook was spot on on the highway.
anyways, keep those pics coming and get it on the rock and to some comps!!!!

Markil - it'd be quicker to tell you what hasn't been done to it!
And I just broke it on some rocks
Same as what germo did, panhard and rear trackbar....at least I didn't bend the leaves
Hey Germo,it's still not 100% sorted
I would take it to some comps, but it's either broken or I've got it off the road doing something to it
I'm trying to make it a bit more road friendly (and waterproof) ,as I've got a fair hike just to get to the bush...well,interesting bush that is
Nearly went to this year's Tuff Truck, but didn't have enough "seat time" as they say.
Thinking I might go 4.5 gears in the diffs, when I get some more cash... as long as my RH gears hold up...been reading a lot on here about breakages!!!

seat time is over-rated, tuff truck was the first time I drove it off road! it was only restistered on the thursday and comp on friday!
put coils in the rear, that will sort the trackbar. I had 3 different trackbars in the rear, same design, just got stronger, every comp 4x4 expedition found a new weak point.
oh I miss the old girl!

^ then
and now..
Meh,couldn't be assed with a coil rear..that's why I bought it off you in the first place!! No room, and don't have the tools required anymore
