If i've got oil all over/around my non-PS steering box, would it be the pitman arm seal? is this easy to fix? can i expect the bearings to be shagged?
it steers very nicely and has very little slop.

Yes its the pitman arm seal, no the bearings wont be shagged if it still feels nice to drive, no its not a fun job to fix, but its not complicated. Couple of bux in parts and you'll be going again, but take the pitman arm off before you remove the box from its mounting, gives you something to lever against. After you put it all back together, the adjustment is the lug screw with the lock nut directly opposite the pitman arm, doesnt need much to adjust either. Spray it a nice bright colour while its out too, funny how many people stop to find out what that neon blue is underneith the bonnet of an ex-mil beige 40.
