3.5 ones are very expensive. $800 is cheap for one. The 3.0's are much more reasonably priced.

Recently replaced the clutch in my NJ TDI (original, 365000km!!!!).
Yours will have the same gearbox and I assume the clutches will be similar if not the same.
Yours will probably have a duel mass flywheel though, recommended to be replaced with the clutch.
The DM flywheel is where the big dollars are.
My clutch kit (a good quality Japanese Exedy/Daikin unit) cost me about $800 dollars trade (fitted my self).
A "cheap" PBR unit was about $1500 retail. After hearing that I didn't ask for a trade price, thought it would still be too dear (why do big ticket items always go "putt" when funds are tight).
Surprisingly genuine items (clutch plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing) only added up to about $850 - $900 trade, cheaper than a PBR unit.

Maybe investigate the possibilty of sourcing a 2nd hand solid flywheel, the increased NVH over the DM unit may be hard to pick up in these vehicles now they have quite a few ks on them, although I have never driven a vehicle with a dual mass flywheel to notice the difference anyway.
