I read this book ages ago when I was turboing the V6 in my 4Runner. I found it really really good for explaining everything about setting up custom turbo setups. (both on a budget and no expense spared)

Anyway, stumbled across a website where it can be downloaded and thought it might be of use to some people. (25mb pdf)

Yeah I have that book in its paper form.
Its a good read.
It doesnt go into the diesel side of things much though.

Like I said it is a good read!
Most of the stuff with turbos relates across the board anyway.
The book is aimed at high performance petrol street engines but the main princibles of forced induction apply to any engine.

Hehe, long story......if you go to the bottom of the first page of the members thread of the 4runner there is all the pics and details of how far the turbo setup got.

Basically just had the exhuast manifold to do, but had the engine running on wold engine management, bigger injectors, water to air intercooler done, 3" mandrel bent exhaust, etc. Then the V6 died to a dodgy tune by a so called 'expert'.

Then I found out about the 1uz conversion, sold all the turbo sh!t, and never looked back.

The cold side of a sizing up a diesel turbo is the same as a petrol turbo. Main differences are usually diesel runs higher boost and lower rpm.

The hot side, diesels colder exhaust means we need smaller A/R exhaust housings (and/or turbine wheels) to get spool up at a usable rev range.

this is what ive been sussing out this arvo... it was the question i was going to ask (main difference between diesel and petrol engine), i have read the above and read heaps on the net but still nothing really firm to give me a idea.. still researching though..

It's a good book, It's a little dated now though, I'll bet the 1st publication was 20 years ago, I've had mine 10 years I rekon. The honeywell Garett web site has some good and current info including some tiered explainations of turbo design and operation.

for diesels or petrols.. can find basically anything for petrols but stuff all on turbocharger selection for diesels.

I thought the turbo proper sizing in a diesel engine take much more care, coz you have 2k rpm to play with full boost .. instead of 4k rpm or more in a gas engine . .
