G'day,

I am assesing my options for converting to Fuel Inject my 253 Holden V8. and would appreciate any omments/experiences people have had with aftermarket EFI setups.

OPTION 1:
Holley ProJection
Cost $1500
Pro's
Easy, comes with absolutely everything, self tunable, can easily be reverted back to carby if it craps itself in the outback.
Con's
Have heard people have had dramas, not ideal setup for efficiency/power but good compromise.

OPTION 2:
DIY EFI - 4 injectors in a baseplate to standard manifold with elbow & Falcon throttlebody using Camira sensors and computer.
Cost $800 approx.
Pro's
Cheap, easy to get parts for.
Con's
Getting the tune right, reliability??

OPTION 3:
Late model Multipoint EFI setup off a VN?
Pro's
Best performance
Con's
Would have to reconfigure all the ancilaries on the front of the motor to make room for the injection manifold (not easy in a hilux as there is no room)

Anybody have any experience with Aftermarket EFI setups like the ProJection or Home made setups??

EA/ EB TBI unit with megasquirt ecu, bolt on and no probs with fitting individual injectors.

you will have nothing but drama's with the holley projection!
I've had a number off modded injected holdens- and even though it cost's more in the beggining.. you will be better off getting a 308 with the trimatic pattern (same as your 253) and throwing a small cam in/ then putting standard vn top end on.. then all you have to worry about is making some custom headers- easy as! plus it will be much more reliable.

you can pick up vn 304's for $500/600 with big k's put the injsction on a tri pattern 308 (maybe 500-1000 max) and drop a small cam'n lifter kit in (no larger than say a crane 284..) and sold!

but its all the small stuff that will kill your budget.. fuel pump/lines/etc

your ancilliries can all stay in the same spot..

Hey mate i'd go option 2 ! but why the falcon TB, alot of ppl go that for some reason but i'm not sure why ?

I'd go a camira/n13 pulsar delco setup running a commoodore v6/v8 or yella terra big bore TB. Parts easy as, probably get a whole camira with all teh stuff for less than $200, commodore TB from wreckers is 35 plus you'll need to do some mods getting it all onto the motor, shouldnt be to bad.

My previous car ran a delco setup with a commodore TB, me and a mate tuned it ourselves with some easily obtanable stuff and a laptop at home. Bonuses being, parts are everywhere! proven relativly reliable and its very easy to tune aslong as you dont run boost

i thought you could machine a tad off the 253 bores to gain valve clearence for the 304 heads?

Cant remember the measurment but they are the largest factory throttle body out of anything available in Aus. Well they were a few years back. Not sure now.

As far as im aware the heads bolt straight on with no mods. Early 253/308 heads were also identical. Unless they were L34 heads.

I had a Modified 308 in a VL that ran 13.5 1/4 with the Holley Projection. Never had a problem with it. Easy to tune and great performance. Be carefull where you run the supplied hoses as the PO of the VL had ran them to close to the exhast and i bought the VL with an engine bay fire. They supply nylon hoses with the kit.

Where did you get the gear to tune the camira computer? my brother thinks you need a "calmaker" (something like that) to tune it which he said was almost as expensive as a WOLF computer.

I have a laptop in the car anyway, just need whatever is required to uinterface with the dalco computer.

Seem to be getting a very mixed response on the Projection seems a lot of people think they are great and a lot think they are rubbish (its like the Airlocker debate..argh!!)

What was the issue with the projection? getting it tuned right/faults with the actual hardware?

Like Loanrangie I went the Megasquirt way with a Falcon EA throttlebody with my old Nissan P40 engine. Works well, but a wideband O2 sensor and controller is essential if you want to tune it properly.

Well, after reseaching all the options, I have gone for a Holley Truck Avenger, was a third the price of projection and the holley rep recomender it over the projection (less money in his pocket!!)

Will let you know how it goes, so far so good, lots more torque!! Didn't miss abeat on a winchwall on the weekend.
Will see how it goes for economy.

If it doesnt impress I will go back to building a home made EFI setup, thanks for all the info peoples.
