Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Can anyone tell me if it is safe to drill holes in the rear of the chassis to enable me to fit a rear recovery hook as I have no rear recovery point. I have an 88 2.5tdi LWB import. I would of course be using High Tensile Steel Bolts to do it if it was safe

I made this to bolt in place of the towball.





It cost me about $20.

My problem is that I regularly use the Tow Bar otherwise the idea would be good

Here in NZ, you can do this but need to get it certified and have crush tubes welded into place through the chassis. Safe as if done right and crush tubes used. I have done it to the front and put recovery hooks on both sides.

If you use the towbar just drill a hole in the middle for one of those eye bolts. It really won't affect anything. I just used a new piece of plate because I bent my towbar from previous recovery attempts and don't really use it.

do you mean drill thru the tow bar and rear chassis crossbar and plate the other side and use a bolt in recovery eye. i hear to use the eyethat is factory welded next to the towbar can be a bit dodgey

If you are going to be doing recoveries then put a rated hook on! !

A hook that is designed to 'open' when load exceedes it and then the rope comes flying off,

which is much more appealing than having a flying piece of metal be it an eye or the shackel that is needed to connect a rope to the eye. Do it once, do it right therefore whoever you are recovering or being recovered are safe.

I have the towbar bolted to the chassis rails on either side and have a hook on the 4 centre bolts. Looking at midifying it at some stage as some trailers with tall hitches don't fit without removing the tow hook.
